102. Peace Be Unto You

1 When the evening came and the doors were barr’d,
They had gathered there in fear,
For the cruel Jews who had slain their Lord,
Might now be lurking near.
‘Twas a fearful time in Jerusalem,
For all His disciples true,
But the Lord Christ came to the midst of them,
And said “Peace be unto you.”

Lord, keep us from slavish fear;
May our hearts valiant be,
Be Thou in love and power near,
May we rejoice in Thee.

2 There the dear Lord show’d both His hands and side
To the friends who loved Him most,
Breathed a mission forth to the world so wide—
“Receive ye the Holy Ghost.”
‘Twas a glorious time in Jerusalem,
For all His disciples true,
For the Lord Christ stood in the midst of them,
And said “Peace be unto you.”

Lord, keep us from slavish fear;
May our hearts valiant be,
Be Thou in love and power near,
May we rejoice in Thee.

3 There was one away from the company
When the Lord appeared to them,
But he said, “Unless I can feel and see,
I will not believe He came.”
Then the Savior came at the close of day,
And drew him in love aside,
“Seeing thou hast believed, yet blest are they
Who see not, yet in faith abide.” [Refrain]

Lord, keep us from servile doubt;
May our faith constant be,
Whether we see and feel or not,
We will believe in Thee.
