English Christmas is celebrated "in the bleak midwinter." But what the composer tries to capture in this carol is the hot and dusty climate of the Middle East into which Christ was born. We travel with the three kings on their desert pilgrimage under the scorching sun. In a land where water is precious, the Christ Child becomes the Spring of Life, the Oasis at the end of their journey.
