Clark attended Amherst College; Union Theological Seminary, New York; and Columbia University. In 1904, he went to India as a Congregational Church missionary; in 1925, he founded the Nagpada Neighborhood House in Bombay (now Mumbai). He later served as principal of Union Training College and the United Theological College, secretary to the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (1930-47), and trustee of the International Medical Missionary Society and secretary for India, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Philippines, Spain, and Mexico.
