Madan, Judith, née Cowper, was the only daughter of the Hon. Spencer Cowper, the wife of Colonel Martin Madan (d. 1736), and the mother of Martin Madan, and of Dr. Spencer Madan, sometime Bishop of Peterborough. She had some repute as a writer of verse. Her Burial Hymn, "In this world of sin and sorrow," appeared in the 1763 Appendix to her son's Psalms & Hymns in 2 stanzas of 8 lines. It has been repeated in several collections in Great Britain and America, and is. given without alteration in Lyra Britannica 1867, p. 659. We have failed to ascertain the date of Mm. Madan's birth or death.
