1 Father, blessing every seed-time,
and refreshing all the soil,
ripening the gracious harvest
for which all thy servants toil:
O thou source of every blessing
showered daily from above,
hearken to our lips confessing‿
our thanksgiving for thy love.

2 Here we bless thy hand that gave us‿
though and feeling, life and limb;
bless thy Son, who dies to save us,
in our glad and joyous hymn;
bless thy Spirit, who doth make us‿
fit to worship as we ought;
Father, leave not nor forsake us,
till into thy garner brought.

3 With thy dews and sunshine tend us
through life's long and changeful year;
from the enemy defend us,
lest the tares of sin appear:
let thine eye and hand the keepers‿
of our souls for ever be,
till thine angel harvest-reapers
sheaves of glory bind for thee.

Author: John S. B. Monsell

John Samuel Bewley Monsell (b. St. Colomb's, Londonderry, Ireland, 1811; d. Guilford, Surrey, England, 1875) was educated at Trinity College in Dublin and served as a chaplain and rector of several churches in Ireland after his ordination in 1835. Transferred to England in 1853, he became rector of Egham in Surrey and was rector of St. Nicholas Church in Guilford from 1870 until his death (caused by a construction accident at his church). A prolific poet, Monsell published his verse in eleven volumes. His three hundred hymns, many celebrating the seasons of the church year, were issued in collections such as Hymns and Miscellaneous Poems (1837), Spiritual Songs (1857), Hymns of Love and Praise (1863), and The Parish Hymnal (1873). Father, blessing every seed-time. This is an altered form of Dr. Monsell's "Bounteous blesser of the seed-time," p. 763, i. 41. In some collections it is appointed for "Rogation Days," as in The Hymnary, 1872, where it is wrongly given to Judith Madan. [Rev. James Mearns, M.A.]
