Payne, John Howard. (New York, N.Y., April 1, 1791--April 1, 1852, Tunis). American actor, playwright, and diplomat. After a successful career in America, London, and Paris he was appointed American consul in Tunis in 1841. He adapted many plays, wrote a few original ones, and edited several short-lived magazines. There are several biographies.
