Make me a captive, Lord

Author: George Matheson, 1842-1906 Hymnal: Together in Song #604 (1999) Meter: 6.6.8.6 D Scripture: Jeremiah 17:5-9 Lyrics: 1 Make me a captive, Lord, and then I shall be free; force me to render up my sword, and I shall conqueror be. I sink in life's alarms when by myself I stand; imprison me within thine arms, and strong shall be my hand. 2 My heart is weak and poor until it master find; it has no spring of action sure, it varies with the wind. It cannot freely move, till thou hast wrought its chain; enslave it with thy matchless love, and deathless it shall reign. 3 My will is not my own till thou hast made it thine; if it would reach a monarch's throne, it must its crown resign; it only stands unbent amid the clashing strife, when on thy bosom it has leant, and found in thee its life. Topics: Commitment; Consolation; Courage; Faith; Freedom; Jesus Christ Kingship; Personal Petition; Personal Response to Jesus Languages: English Tune Title: ICH HALTE TREULICH STILL

All my hope on God is founded

Author: Robert Bridges, 1844-1930; Joachim Neander, 1650-1680 Hymnal: Common Praise #368 (2000) Meter: 8.7.8.7.3.3.7 Scripture: Jeremiah 17:7 Lyrics: 1 All my hope on God is founded; he doth still my trust renew. Me through change and chance he guideth, only good and only true. God unknown, he alone calls my heart to be his own. 2 Pride of man and earthly glory, sword and crown betray his trust; what with care and toil he buildeth, tower and temple, fall to dust. But God's power, hour by hour, is my temple and my tower. 3 God's great goodness aye endureth, deep his wisdom, passing thought: splendour, light, and life attend him, beauty springeth out of naught. Evermore from his store new-born worlds rise and adore. 4 Daily doth th' Almighty giver bounteous gifts on us bestow; his desire our soul delighteth, pleasure leads us where we go. Love doth stand at his hand; joy doth wait on his command. 5 Still from earth to God eternal sacrifice of praise be done, high above all praises praising for the gift of Christ his Son. Christ doth call one and all: ye who follow shall not fall. Topics: Fourth Sunday Before Lent Year C; Proper 4 Year A; Proper 26 Year A Languages: English Tune Title: MICHAEL
