1799 - 1885 Hymnal Number: 13 Composer of "SANDON" in Representative American Hymns of the Twentieth Century Charles H. Purday (1799-1885) A publisher, composer, lecturer, and writer, Purday had a special interest in church music. He published Crown Court Psalmody (1854), Church and Home Metrical Psalter and Hymnal (1860), which included SANDON, and, with Frances Havergal, Songs of Peace and Joy (1879). A precentor in the Scottish Church in Crown Court, London, Purday sang at the coronation of Queen Victoria. Eduard Kremser

1838 - 1914 Person Name: Eduard Kremser (1838-1914) Hymnal Number: 16 Arranger of "KREMSER" in Representative American Hymns of the Twentieth Century Eduard Kremser was born 10 October 1838 in Vienna and died 26 November 1914 in Vienna. He was a choir director, conductor, composer and musicologist. He was the arranger of the music for male voices in Sechs altniederländische Volkslieder, a collection of six Dutch folk songs from Adriaan Valerius' collection Nederlandtsche gedenck-clanck. From this collection comes the tune which is named after him and is sung with the English text "We Gather Together." He also edited and arranged a 3 volume set of German and Austrian folk music: Wiener Lieder und Tänze: im Auftrage der Gemeindevertretimg der Stadt Wien (published 1912-1925) as well as other volumes of folk music. Edward Hodges

1796 - 1867 Person Name: Edward Hodges, (1796-1867) Hymnal Number: 2 Arranger of "HYMN TO JOY" in Representative American Hymns of the Twentieth Century Born: July 20, 1796, Bristol, England. Died: September 1, 1867, Clifton, Bristol, England. Buried: Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Stanton Drew (about eight miles south of Bristol). Hodges’ musical gift showed itself at an early age; by 1819, he was playing the organ at St. James’ Church in Bristol, and at St. Nicholas’, 1821-1838. He also had an interesting mechanical bent, and spurred several technical improvements in organ design. He composed a number of services and anthem pieces, and Cambridge University awarded him a doctorate in music in 1825. Hodges eventually emigrated, accepting a post at the cathedral in Toronto, Canada, in 1838. The next year, he became music director at Trinity Parish in New York City. He became the organist at Trinity Church when it opened in 1846 (the church had its organ built to his specifications). He retired for health reasons in 1859, and returned to his native England in 1863. Born at Montego Bay, he studied under Sabine-Baring Gould, and attended Worcester College,Oxford. Hugh Thomson Kerr

1871 - 1950 Hymnal Number: 13 Author of "God of Our Life" in Representative American Hymns of the Twentieth Century Hugh Thomson Kerr (1872-1950) Born: February 11, 1872, Elora, Canada. Died: June 27, 1950, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Buried: Homewood Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Kerr attended the University of Toronto and Western Theological Seminary, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Ordained a Presbyterian minister, he pastored in Kansas and Illinois, and at the Shadyside Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh (1913-1946). A pioneer in religious broadcasting, his 1922 Christmas Day sermon was broadcast to the North and South Poles by radio station KDKA. John Haynes Holmes

Died: April 3, 1964, New York City. Buried: Community Church of New York Unitarian Universalist, New York City. Holmes graduated from Harvard University, Phi Beta Kappa. His grandfather, John Cummings Haynes, manager of the Oliver Ditson music publishing house, helped pay his Harvard tuition. Holmes was ordained in 1904, and became minister of the Unitarian Third Congregational Church, Dorchester, Massachusetts.
