E. M. Bartlett

1885 - 1941 Person Name: Eugene M. Bartlett Hymnal Number: 73 Author of "Victory In Jesus" in CCLI Top 100 E. M. Bartlett was born December 24, 1883 in Waynesville, Missouri. His family later moved to Sebastian County, Arkansas. Bartlett received training as a music teacher and was a leader in developing Southern gospel music. He was employed by Central Music Company, a publisher of shape note singing books based in Hartford, which was owned by David Moore and Will H. Ramsey. Bartlett persuaded Moore and John A. McClung to partner with him to form Hartford Music Company. In 1921, Bartlett established the Hartford Music Institute, a shape note school. He provided opportunities for many songwriters and musicians in gospel music, including Albert E. Brumley. In 1939 he suffered a stroke and afterwards wrote "Victory in Jesus." John T. Grape

1835 - 1915 Person Name: John Thomas Grape Hymnal Number: 42 Composer of "[I hear the Savior say]" in CCLI Top 100 John Thomas Grape USA 1835-1915. Born at Baltimore, MD, he became a successful coal merchant. He married Sophia F MacCubbin, and they had one daughter, Agnes. He was a member of Monument St. Methodist Church in Baltimore, where he played the organ, directed the choir, and was active in the Sunday school. Later, he directed the choir at the Hartford Avenue Methodist Church. The hymn noted below was composed by Grape in 1868, with lyrics composed by Envina Mable Hall of the same church in 1865 while sitting in the choir loft during a sermon. Both words and music had been given to the pastor, Rev George W Schreck, at different times, and one day he remembered he had been given both. Grape's tune had a refrain, so Ms Hall, hearing it, then added words to her poem for that, and the hymn was complete. At Schreck's urging they sent the hymn to Professor Theodore Perkins, publisher of “Sabbath Carols” periodical, and it became popular. Grape died in Baltimore. John Perry

Gloria Gaither

b. 1942 Hymnal Number: 53 Author of "Because He Lives" in CCLI Top 100 Gloria Gaither (born March 4, 1942) is a Christian songwriter, author, speaker, editor, and academic. She is the wife of Bill Gaither and also sang in the Bill Gaither Trio, one of the most influential groups in recent Christian music. She was born Gloria Lee Sickal in 1942 in Michigan, a daughter of pastor Lee Sickal and Dorothy Sickal. She spent most of her childhood and high school career in the Battle Creek area of Michigan, working a brief time for the Kellogg Company. When Sickal graduated from high school, she attended Anderson University in Anderson, Indiana. There, she triple majored in English, French, and Sociology. Upon her graduation, she took a job at Alexandria Monroe High School as a French teacher. There, she met Bill Gaither, who was teaching English at the time. She married Gaither in 1962, and they began writing songs recreationally. By the end of the 1960s, Gloria, Bill, and his brother Danny Gaither were touring steadily, as the Bill Gaither Trio. After touring with the Bill Gaither Trio, Gaither drew her focus to the Gaither Homecoming series. She has been an active presence in every video production. Gaither is currently the scriptwriter and narrator for the Homecoming series. In 1991, she attended Ball State University and received a Master of Arts in Literature. She taught as an adjunct professor at Anderson University for periods in the late 80s and late 90s. In 1996, she spearheaded the creation of Gaither Family Reources in Alexandria, Indiana, and currently serves as co-owner and managing director. In 2002, Gaither launched Homecoming:

Charitie Lees Smith

1841 - 1923 Person Name: Charitee Lees Bancroft Hymnal Number: 86 Author of "Before The Throne of God Above" in CCLI Top 100 Bancroft, Charitie Lees, née Smith, daughter of the Rev. Sidney Smith, D.D., Rector of Drumragh, County Tyrone, Ireland; was born at Bloomfield, Merrion, in the county of Dublin, June 21,1841; and married, in 1869, to Arthur E. Bancroft. Her hymns have appeared in periodicals, Lyra Britannica, Bishop Ryle's Spiritual Songs, and other collections, and also as leaflets. The following have come into common usage:— 1. O for the [a] robes [robe] of whiteness. Heaven desired. This favorite children's hymn was 1st pub. as a leaflet in 1860. In 1867 it was included in Lyra Britannica, and thence has passed into several collections in Great Britain and America. 2. The King of glory standeth. Christ the Saviour. Contributed in 7 stanzas of 8 1ines to the Lyra Britannica, 1867, and entitled "Mighty to save." In the Hymns & Songs of Praise, N. Y., 1874, No. 1196, it begins with stanza iii., "He comes in bloodstained garments." 3. Before the throne of God above. The Advocate. Dated 1863, and given in Spurgeon's Our Own Hymn Book, 1806, Laudes Domini, N. Y., 1884. In 1867 Mrs. Bancroft's hymns were collected and published as Within the Veil, by C. L. Keith Getty

b. 1974 Hymnal Number: 11 Author of "In Christ Alone" in CCLI Top 100 Keith Getty (b. December 16, 1974) is a world-renowned modern hymn writer. Keith developed a passion for writing good songs for the church in his twenties, and began writing for his small Baptist church. Stuart Townend

Hymnal Number: 11 Author of "In Christ Alone" in CCLI Top 100 Stuart Townend (b. 1963) grew up in West Yorkshire, England, the youngest son of an Anglican vicar. He started learning piano at a young age, and began writing music at age 22. He has produced albums for Keith Routledge and Vinesong, among many others, and has also released eight solo albums to date. Some of his better-known songs include “How Deep the Father’s Love,” “The King of Love,” and “The Power of the Cross.” He continues to work closely with friends Keith and Kristyn Getty, and is currently a worship leader in Church of Christ the King in Brighton, where he lives with wife Caroline, and children Joseph, Emma and Eden.
