Hail to the Lord's Anointed

Author: James Montgomery (1771-1854) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Appears in 846 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Hail to the Lord's Anointed, great David's greater Son! Hail, in the time appointed, his reign on earth begun! He comes to break oppression, to set the captive free; to take away transgression, and rule in equity. 2 He comes with succour speedy to those who suffer wrong, to help the poor and needy, and bid the weak be strong, to give them songs for sighing, their darkness turn to light, whose souls, condemned and dying, are precious in his sight. 3 He shall come down like showers upon the fruitful earth, and love, joy, hope, like flowers, spring in his path to birth. Before him, on the mountains, shall peace, the herald, go; and righteousness in fountains from hill to valley flow. 4 For him shall prayer unceasing and daily vows ascend, his kingdom still increasing, a kingdom without end. The mountain dew shall nourish a seed, in weakness sown, whose fruit shall spread and flourish and shake like Lebanon. 5 O'er every foe victorious, he on his throne shall rest, from age to age more glorious, all blessing and all-blest. The tide of time shall never his covenant remove; his name shall stand for ever, the name to us is Love. Behold the amazing gift of love

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 38 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Behold the amazing gift of love the Father hath bestowed on us, in calling us his own, the children of our God! 2 Concealed as yet this honour lies, by this dark world unknown, a world that knew not, when he came, even God's eternal Son. 3 High is the rank we now possess; but higher we shall rise, though what we shall hereafter be is hid from mortal eyes: 4 Our souls, we know, when he appears, shall bear his image bright; for all his glory, full disclosed, shall open to our sight. 5 A hope so great and so divine may trials well endure; and purge the soul from sense and sin, as Christ himself is pure. Topics: Christ Risen Coming Again; Heaven; Human Dignity Scripture: 1 John 3:1-3 Used With Tune: ST. STEPHEN (NEWINGTON) Text Sources: Scottish Paraphrases, 1781,Paraphrase 63, alt.

Great God, your love has called us here

Author: Brian Wren (b. 1936) Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 32 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Great God, your love has called us here as we, by love, for love were made. Your living likeness still we bear, though marred, dishonoured, disobeyed. We come, with all our heart and mind your call to hear, your love to find. 2 We come with self-inflicted pains of broken trust and chosen wrong, half-free, half-bound by inner chains, by social forces swept along, by powers and systems close confined, yet seeking hope for humankind. 3 Great God, in Christ you call our name and then receive us as your own, not through some merit, right or claim, but by your gracious love alone. We strain to glimpse your mercy seat and find you kneeling at our feet. 4 Then take the towel, and break the bread, and humble us, and call us friends. Suffer and serve till all are fed, and show how grandly love intends to work till all creation sings, to fill all worlds, to crown all things. 5 Great God, in Christ you set us free your life to live, your joy to share. Give us your Spirit's liberty to turn from guilt and dull despair and offer all that faith can do while love is making all things new. Topics: Our Response to Christ In Penitence; Our Response to God in the worship of God's house; Christ Incarnate Passion and Death; Lent; Christian Year Maundy Thursday; Church Worship; God Love of; Renewal Scripture: 2 Corinthians 3:17 Used With Tune: MELITA

Dear Lord and Father of mankind

Author: John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892) Meter: 8.6.8.8.6.6 Appears in 509 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Dear Lord and Father of mankind, forgive our foolish ways; reclothe us in our rightful mind, in purer lives thy service find, in deeper reverence, praise, in deeper reverence, praise. 2 In simple trust like theirs who heard, beside the Syrian sea, the gracious calling of the Lord, let us, like them, without a word, rise up and follow thee, rise up and follow thee. 3 O Sabbath rest by Galilee! O calm of hills above, where Jesus knelt to share with thee the silence of eternity interpreted by love, interpreted by love! 4 With that deep hush subduing all our words and works that drown the tender whisper of thy call, as noiseless let thy blessing fall as fell thy manna down, as fell thy manna down. 5 Drop thy still dews of quietness, till all our strivings cease; take from our souls the strain and stress, and let our ordered lives confess the beauty of thy peace, the beauty of thy peace. 6 Breathe through the heats of our desire thy coolness and thy balm; let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; speak through the earthquake, wind and fire, O still small voice of calm, O still small voice of calm. Topics: Life in Christ Our Response to Christ - In Penitence; Beauty; God peace of; Trust Scripture: 1 Kings 19:11-13 Used With Tune: REPTON

Make me a captive, Lord

Author: George Matheson (1842-1906) Appears in 120 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Make me a captive, Lord, and then I shall be free; force me to render up my sword, and I shall conqueror be. I sink in life's alarms when by myself I stand; imprison me within thine arms, and strong shall be my hand. 2 My heart is weak and poor until it master find; it has no spring of action sure, it varies with the wind. It cannot freely move till thou hast wrought its chain; enslave it with thy matchless love, and deathless it shall reign. 3 My power is faint and low till I have learned to serve; it lacks the needed fire to glow, it lacks the breeze to nerve; it cannot drive the world until itself be driven; its flag can only be unfurled when thou shalt breathe from heaven. 4 My will is not my own till thou hast made it thine; if it would reach a monarch's throne, it must its crown resign; it only stands unbent amid the clashing strife, when on thy bosom it has leant, and found in thee its life. Topics: Life in Christ Our Response to Christ - In Discipleship Scripture: 2 Corinthians 2:14 Used With Tune: LEOMINSTER

Behold, he that keeps Israel, he slumbers not, nor sleeps. 3 The Lord thee keeps; the Lord thy shade on thy right hand doth stay; the moon by night thee shall not smite nor yet the sun by day. 4 The Lord shall keep thy soul; he shall preserve thee from all ill; henceforth thy going out and in God keep for ever will. My voice, Lord, do thou hear: unto my supplications' voice give an attentive ear. 2 Lord, who shall stand, if thou, O Lord, should'st mark iniquity? But yet with thee forgiveness is, that feared though mayest be. 3 I wait for God, my soul doth wait, my hope is in his word. More than they that for morning watch, my soul waits for the Lord; 4 I say, more than they that do watch the morning light to see. I waited for the Lord my God

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 66 hymnals Lyrics: 1 I waited for the Lord my God, and patiently did bear; at length to me he did incline, my voice and cry to hear. 2 He took me from a fearful pit and from the miry clay, and on a rock he set my feet, establishing my way. 3 He put a new song in my mouth, our God to magnify: many shall see it, and shall fear, and on the Lord rely. 4 O blessèd are all they whose trust upon the Lord relies; respecting not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
