Come, ye faithful, raise the anthem

Author: Job Hupton, 1762-1849; J. M. Neale, 1818-66 Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Appears in 82 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Come, ye faithful, raise the anthem, Cleave the skies with shouts of praise; Sing to him who found the ransom, Ancient of eternal days, God eternal, Word incarnate, Whom the heaven of heaven obeys. 2 Ere he raised the lofty mountains, Formed the sea, or built the sky, Love eternal, free, and boundless, Forced the Lord of life to die, Lifted up the Prince of princes On the throne of Calvary. 3 Now on those eternal mountains Stands the sapphire throne, all bright, With the ceaseless alleluias Which they raise, the sons of light; Sion's people tell his praises, Victor after hard-won fight. 4 Bring your harps, and bring your incense, Sweep the string and pour the lay; Let the earth proclaim his wonders, King of that celestial day; He the Lamb once slain is worthy, Who was dead, and lives for ay. 5 Laud and honour to the Father, Laud and honour to the Son, Laud and honour to the Spirit, Ever Three and ever One, One in love, and One in splendour, While unending ages run. Amen. Topics: Eastertide; Ascensiontide Used With Tune: NEANDER

Of the Father's Love Begotten

Author: Aurelius Clemens Prudentius; J.M. Neale; Henry W. Baker Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Appears in 226 hymnals Refrain First Line: Evermore and evermore Lyrics: 1. Of the Father's love begotten, Ere the worlds began to be, He is Alpha and Omega, He the source, the ending He, Of the things that are, that have been, And that future years shall see, Evermore and evermore. 2. At his word the worlds were framèd; He commanded, it was done: Heav’n and earth and depths of ocean, In their threefold order one; All that grows beneath the shining Of the moon and burning sun— [Evermore and evermore.] 3. He was found in human fashion, Death and sorrow here to know, That the race of Adam’s children, Doomed by law to endless woe, May not henceforth die and perish In the dreadful gulf below— [Evermore and evermore.] 4. O that birth forever blessèd, When the virgin, full of grace, By the Holy Ghost conceiving, Bore the Savior of our race, And the babe, the world’s Redeemer, First revealed his sacred face— [Evermore and evermore.] 5. This is he whom seers in old time Chanted of with one accord, Whom the voices of the prophets Promised in their faithful word; Now he shines, the long-expected; Let creation praise its Lord— [Evermore and evermore.] 6. O ye heights of Heav’n adore him! Angel hosts his praises sing! All dominions bow before him And exalt our God and King. Let no tongue on Earth be silent, Every voice in concert ring— [Evermore and evermore.] 7. Christ! to thee with God the Father, And O Holy Ghost, to thee, Hymn and chant and high thanksgiving And unwearied praises be, Honor, glory, and dominion, And eternal victory— [Evermore and evermore.] Topics: Christmas Scripture: John 1:1-14 Used With Tune: DIVINUM MYSTERIUM

Sing, my tongue, the Saviour’s glory

Author: Thomas Aquinas, c. 1227-74; Edward Caswall, 1814-78 Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Appears in 45 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Sing, my tongue, the Saviour’s glory, of his flesh the mystery sing: of the blood all price exceeding shed by our eternal King, destined for the world's redemption from a Virgin's womb to spring. 2 Born for us, and for us given, born to live like us below, he, a man with us abiding, lived the gospel seed to sow; and at last faced death undaunted, his self-giving love to show. 3 On the night of that last supper, seated with his chosen band, first the passover observing he fulfils the law's command, then as food to his disciples gives himself with his own hand. 4 Word made flesh! His word life-giving gives his flesh our food to be, wine as his own blood he offers; then, though senses fail to see, faith alone the true heart wakens to behold the mystery. 5 Therefore we, before him kneeling, this great sacrament revere; ancient forms all have their ending for the newer rite is here; faith its aid to sight is lending: though unseen, the Lord is here. 6 Glory let us give and blessing, to the Father and the Son, honour, might and praise addressing while eternal ages run, and the Spirit's love confessing, who from both with both is one. Topics: Maundy Thursday; Saints Days and Holy Days Apostles Scripture: Hebrews 9:19-28 Used With Tune: HOLYWOOD
