Lord, Disperse the Mists of Error

Author: Johan Åström Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 4 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Lord, disperse the mists of error, In Thy light let me see light; Give Thou me that faith and vision Whereby I may walk aright. In my Saviour's path discerning, Through this vale of doubt and strife, Footsteps to eternal life. 2 Shed Thy light upon my pathway, Be my light in death's dark hour. Let me, freed from sin's dread burden, From the Law's accusing power, Nearer draw, and ever nearer, To that land with glory bright, Where Thou art Eternal Light. Amen. Had God not come, may Israel say

Author: M. Luther Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 10 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Had God not come, may Israel say, Had God not come to aid us, Our enemies on that sad day Would surely have dismayed us; A remnant now, and handful small, Held in contempt and scorn by all, Who cruelly would oppress us. 2 Their furious wrath, did God permit, Would quickly have consumed us, And in the deep and yawning pit With life and limb entombed us; Like men o'er whom dark waters roll, The streams had gone e'en o'er our soul, And mightily o'erwhelmed us. 3 Thanks be to God, who from the pit Snatched us, when it was gaping: Our souls, like birds that break the net, To the blue sky escaping; The snare is broken--we are free! The Lord our Helper praiséd be, The God of earth and heaven. Topics: Various Occasions Thanksgiving Day; Various Occassions Reformation Day Used With Tune: [Had God not come, may Israel say]

With trembling awe the chosen three

Author: W. W. How Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 4 hymnals Lyrics: 1 With trembling awe the chosen three The holy mount ascended, Where, wrapped in blissful ecstacy, They saw the vision splendid-- Their Lord arrayed in living light, And on His left hand and His right, By glorious saints attended. 2 O vision bright, too bright to tell, The joys of heaven unveiling! How precious on those hearts it fell, When earthly hopes were failing; When, saints no more on either side, Between the thieves the Savior died 'Mid hate, and scorn, and railing! 3 Grant us, dear Lord, some vision brief Of future triumph telling, Gilding with hope our night of grief, Our clouds of fear dispelling. If the dim foretaste was so bright, O what shall be the dazzling light Of Thine eternal dwelling! Look down, O Lord, from heaven behold

Author: M. Luther Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: 1 Look down, O Lord, from heaven behold, And let Thy pity waken! How few the flock within Thy fold, Neglected and forsaken! Men suffer not Thy Word to stand, And faith seems quenched on every hand Dark times have us o'ertaken. 2 With fraud which they themselves invent Thy truth they have confounded; Their hearts are not with one consent On Thy pure doctrine grounded; And, whilst they gleam with outward show, They lead Thy people to and fro, In error's maze astounded. 3 God surely will uproot all those Who with deceits now store us; with haughty tongue they God oppose, And say, "Who stands before us? By right or might we shall prevail; What we determine cannot fail, For who can lord it o'er us?" 4 Then saith our God: I will arise, These wolves My flock are rending; I've heard My people's bitter sighs To heaven, My throne, ascending: My saving Word shall fight And fearlessly and sharply smite, The poor with might defending. 5 As silver tried by fire is pure From all adulteration; So, through God's word, shall men endure Each trial and temptation: Its worth gleams brighter through the cross, And, purified from human dross, It shines through every nation. 6 Defend, O God, Thy truth, and stay This evil generation; And from the error of their way Keep Thine own congregation. The wicked everywhere abound, And would Thy little flock confound, Which, Lord, forbid them. Amen.
