To thee, O Lord, our hearts we raise

Author: William Chatterton Dix, 1837-1898 Hymnal: Common Praise #274 (2000) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Scripture: Matthew 20:12 Lyrics: 1 To thee, O Lord, our hearts we raise in hymns of adoration, to thee bring sacrifice of praise with shouts of exultation: bright robes of gold the fields adorn, the hills with joy are ringing, the valleys stand so thick with corn that even they are singing. 2 And now, on this our festal day, thy bounteous hand confessing, upon thine altar, Lord, we lay the first-fruits of thy blessing: by thee the hungry soul is fed with gifts of grace supernal; thou who dost give us earthly bread, give us the bread eternal. 3 We bear the burden of the day, and often toil seems dreary; but labour ends with sunset ray, and rest comes for the weary: may we, the angel-reaping o'er, stand at the last accepted, Christ's golden sheaves for evermore to garners bright elected. 4 O blessèd is that land of God, where saints abide for ever; where golden fields spread far and broad, where flows the crystal river: the strains of all its holy throng with ours today are blending; thrice blessèd is that harvest-song which never hath an ending. Light's abode, celestial Salem

Author: Thomas À Kempis, c. 1380-1471; J. M. Neale, 1818-1866 Hymnal: Common Praise #502 (2000) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Scripture: Matthew 20:12 Lyrics: 1 Light's abode, celestial Salem, vision whence true peace doth spring, brighter than the heart can fancy, mansion of the highest King; O how glorious are the praises which of thee the prophets sing! 2 There for ever and for ever alleluia is outpoured; for unending, for unbroken, is the feast-day of the Lord; all is pure and all is holy that within thy walls is stored. 3 There no cloud or passing vapour dims the brightness of the air; endless noon-day, glorious noon-day, from the Sun of suns is there; there no night brings rest from labour, for unknown are toil and care. *4 O how glorious and resplendent, fragile body, shalt thou be, when endued with so much beauty, full of health and strong and free, full of vigour, full of pleasure that shall last eternally. *5 Now with gladness, now with courage, bear the burden on thee laid, that hereafter these thy labours may with endless gifts be paid; and in everlasting glory thou with brightness be arrayed. 6 Laud and honour to the Father, laud and honour to the Son, laud and honour to the Spirit, ever Three and ever One, consubstantial, co-eternal, while unending ages run.
