Come, O Thou Traveler Unknown

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 298 hymnals Topics: Trials First Line: Come O thou Traveler unknown Lyrics: 1 Come, O thou Traveler unknown, whom still I hold, but cannot see! My company before is gone, and I am left alone with thee. With thee all night I mean to stay and wrestle till the break of day. 2 Wilt thou not yet to me reveal thy new, unutterable name? Tell me, I still beseech thee, tell, to know it now resolved I am. Wrestling, I will not let thee go till I thy name, thy nature know. 3 My strength is gone, my nature dies, I sink beneath thy weighty hand, faint to revive, and fall to rise. I fall, and yet by faith I stand; I stand and will not let thee go till I thy name, thy nature know. 4 Yield to me now—for I am weak, but confident in self-despair! Speak to my heart, in blessing speak, be conquered by my instant prayer. Speak, or thou never hence shalt move, and tell me if thy name is Love. 5 ‘Tis Love! ‘tis Love that wrestled me! I hear thy whisper in my heart. The morning breaks, the shadows flee, pure, universal Love thou art. To me, to all, thy mercies move— thy nature and thy name is Love. Scripture: Genesis 32:24-30 Used With Tune: VERNON Text Sources: based on Genesis 32:24-30; Hymns and Sacred Poems, 1742, alt.

Farther Along

Author: W. B. S. Meter: 10.9.10.9 with refrain Appears in 96 hymnals Topics: Trials and Tribulations First Line: Tempted and tried we're oft made to wonder Refrain First Line: Farther along we'll know all about it Lyrics: 1 Tempted and tried we’re oft made to wonder Why it should be thus all the day long, While there are others living about us, Never molested tho' in the wrong. Refrain: Farther along we’ll know all about it, Farther along we’ll understand why; Cheer up, my brother, live in the sunshine, We’ll understand it all by and by. 2 When death has come and taken our loved ones, It leaves our home so lonely and drear; Then do we wonder why others prosper, Living so wicked year after year. [Refrain] 3 Faithful till death said our loving Master, A few more days to labor and wait; Toils of the road will then seem as nothing, As we sweep thru the beautiful gate. [Refrain] 4 When we see Jesus coming in glory When He comes from His home in the sky; Then we shall meet Him in that bright mansion, We'll understand it all by and by. [Refrain] Used With Tune: FARTHER ALONG

Christian, Dost Thou See Them

Author: Andrew of Crete (660-732); John Mason Neale Meter: 6.5.6.5 D Appears in 313 hymnals Topics: Trial and Conflict; Life in Christ Trial and Conflict Lyrics: 1 Christian, dost thou see them On the holy ground, How the powers of darkness Rage thy steps around? Christian, up and smite them, Counting gain but loss, In the strength that cometh By the holy cross. 2 Christian, dost thou feel them, How they work within, Striving, tempting, luring, Goading into sin? Christian, never tremble; Never be downcast; Gird thee for the battle; Thou shalt win at last. 3 Christian, dost thou hear them, How they speak thee fair? "Always fast and vigil? Always watch and prayer?" Christian, answer boldly, "While I breathe I pray!" Peace shall follow battle, Night shall end in day. 4 "Well I know thy trouble, O My servant true, Thou art very weary— I was weary too; But that toil shall make thee Someday all Mine own, And the end of sorrow Shall be near My throne." Amen. Scripture: Mark 14:38 Used With Tune: ST. ANDREW OF CRETE

Am I a Soldier of the Cross?

Author: Isaac Watts Appears in 2,011 hymnals Topics: Trials First Line: Am I a soldier of the cross Lyrics: 1 Am I a soldier of the cross? A foll'wer of the Lamb, And shall I fear to own His cause, Or blush to speak His name? 2 Must I be carried to the skies On flowery beds of ease, While others fought to win the prize, And sailed thro' bloody seas? 3 Are there no foes for me to face? Must I not stem the flood? Is this vile world a friend to grace, To help me on to God? 4 Sure I must fight if I would reign; Increase my courage, Lord. I'll bear the toil, endure the pain, Supported by Thy word. Amen. Used With Tune: [Am I a soldier of the cross]
