Complaint of a general Corruption of Manners; or, The Promise and Signs of Christ's coming in Judgement

Appears in 51 hymnals Topics: Falsehood and Oppression; Falsehood and Oppression First Line: Help, Lord, for men of virutue fail Lyrics: 1 Help, Lord, for men of virtue fail, Religion looses ground! The sons of violence prevail, And treacheries abound; 2 Their oaths and promises they break, Yet act the flatterer’s part; With fair deceitful lips they speak, And with a double heart. 3 If we reprove some hateful lie, They scorn our faithful word: "Are not our lips our own," they cry, "And who shall be our Lord?" 4 Scoffers appear on every side, Where a vile race of men Is rais'd to seats of power and pride, And bears the sword in vain. Pause. 5 Lord, when iniquities abound, And blasphemy grows bold, When faith is rarely to be found, And love is waxing cold: 6 Is not thy chariot hastening on? Hast thou not given this sign? May we not trust and live upon A promise so divine? 7 "Yes, saith the Lord, now will I rise, "And make th' oppressors flee; "I shall appear to their surprise, "And set my servants free." 8 Thy word, like silver seven times try'd, Through ages shall endure; The men that in thy truth confide, Shall find thy promise sure. Scripture: Psalm 12

Hear My Words, O LORD

Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 24 hymnals Topics: Falsehood; Falsehood First Line: Hear my words, O LORD my God Lyrics: 1 Hear my words, O LORD my God; listen to my sighs and groans. Hear my cry, my king, my God, I will pray to you alone. When the morning comes, O LORD, you shall hear my pleading cries; I will watch when comes the dawn; I will bring my sacrifice. 2 Surely you are not a God who in evil takes delight; evil shall not dwell with you, nor the proud stand in your sight. Evildoers, LORD, you hate; lying ones will you lay waste. Men who murder and deceive, God, the LORD, abhors and hates. 3 But in your great love will I come into your house of grace. Rev'rent, I will worship there, bowing toward your holy place. Guide me safely, O my LORD, in your perfect righteousness; since my enemies are near, make straight paths before my face. 4 Not one word they say is true; from their heart destruction comes; and their throats are open graves, yet they flatter with their tongues. Make them bear their guilt, O God; let them by their counsels fall; snare them in the schemes they plan, for against you they rebel. 5 Let all those who flee to you find their refuge and be glad. Let them ever sing for joy, ever them protection spread. Those who truly love your name magnify you with their praise. You will bless the righteous, LORD, shielding him with all your grace. Scripture: Psalm 5 Used With Tune: ABERYSTWYTH Text Sources: The Psalter, 1912; alt.

Or say, our lips are not our own? 5 The Lord, who sees the poor opprest, And hears th' oppressor's haughty strain, Will rise to give his children rest, Nor shall they trust his word in vain. 6 Thy word, O Lord, though often try'd, Void of deceit shall still appear; Not silver, seven times purify'd From dross and mixture, shines so clear. 7 Thy grace shall in the darkest hour Defend the from danger and surprise; Tho' when the vilest men have power, On every side oppressors rise. By Nature all Men are Sinners

Appears in 62 hymnals Topics: Falsehood, Blasphemy etc.; Falsehood, Blasphemy etc. First Line: Fools in their hearts believe and say Lyrics: 1 Fools in their hearts believe and say, "That all religion’s vain, "There is no God that reigns on high, "Or minds th’ affairs of men." 2 From thoughts so dreadful and profane Corrupt discourse proceeds; And in their impious hands are found Abominable deeds. 3 The Lord, from his celestial throne Look'd down on things below, To find the man that sought his grace, Or did his justice know. 4 By nature all are gone astray, Their practice all the same; There’s none that fears his Maker’s hand, There’s none that loves his name. 5 Their tongues are us'd to speak deceit, Their slanders never cease; How swift to mischief are their feet; Nor know the paths of peace. 6 Such seeds of sin (that bitter root) In every heart are found; Nor can they bear diviner fruit, 'Till grace refine the ground. I Cried to God in My Distress

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 6 hymnals Topics: Falsehood Lyrics: 1 I cried to God in my distress, And by the Lord my prayer was heard; O save me, Lord, from lying lips And from the false, deceitful word. 2 What woe for falsehood can atone, Or punish the deceitful tongue, The tongue whose speech consumes like fire, Whose words like deadly shafts are flung? 3 Alas for me, whose lot is cast With those who find their joy in strife! With those who hate the paths of peace I long have dwelt and spent my life. 4 In thought and act I am for peace, Peace I pursue and ever seek; But those about me are for strife, Though I in love and kindness speak. O God, Whom I Delight to Praise

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 6 hymnals Topics: Falsehood Lyrics: 1 O God, whom I delight to praise, To Thee my cry for help I raise; Be Thou my Friend and Advocate When foes assail with bitter hate. 2 Against me slanderous words are flung From many a false and lying tongue; Without a cause men hurl at me The shafts of deadly enmity. 3 My good with evil they repay, My love turns not their hate away; The part of vengeance, Lord, is Thine, To pray, and only pray, is mine. 4 Since love appeals to him in vain, The slave of sin let him remain; Against him let his foe be turned, His sin be judge, his prayer be spurned. 5 Let sudden death upon him break, His office let another take, His children and his widowed wife Pursue the homeless beggar's life. 6 Let creditors consume his toil And strangers make his wealth their spoil; Let none in pity heed his claim, Cut off his race, blot out his name. 7 His parents' sins be not forgot Till Thou from earth his memory blot, Since he remembered not to show Compassion to the sons of woe. 8 He cursing loved and blessing loathed; Unblest, with cursing he is clothed; For thus the justice of the Lord My adversaries will reward. 9 O God, the Lord, for Thy Name's sake Let me of Thy good grace partake; My need is great, and great Thou art To heal my wounded, stricken heart. 10 With failing strength I fast and pine, Like shadows swift my days decline, And when my foes my weakness see They shake the head in scorn at me. 11 O Lord my God, Thy help I crave, In Thy great lovingkindness save; Before my foes Thy mercy show; That Thou dost help me make them know. 12 What though they curse, if Thou wilt bless? Then joy shall banish my distress, And shame shall overwhelm the foes Who would Thy servant's way oppose. 13 Thanksgiving to the Lord I raise, The multitude shall hear my praise, For by the needy God will stand To save them from oppression's hand. Scripture: Psalm 109 Used With Tune: PENTECOST
