The Last Judgement

Appears in 72 hymnals Topics: Judgment Day; Judgment Day First Line: The God of glory sends his summons forth Lyrics: 1 The God of glory sends his summons forth, Calls the south nations and awakes the north; From east to west the sovereign orders spread, Thro' distant worlds and regions of the dead. The trumpet sounds; hell tremble; heaven rejoices; Lift up your heads, ye saints, with cheerful voices. 2 No more shall atheists mock his long delay; His vengeance sleeps no more; behold the day; Behold the Judge descends; his guards are nigh; Tempest and fire attend him down the sky. When God appears, all nature shall adore him; While sinners tremble, saints rejoice before him. 3 "Heaven, earth, and hell draw near: let all things come "To hear my justice and the sinner's doom; "But gather first my saints; the Judge commands; "Bring them, ye angels, from their distant lands. When Christ returns, wake every cheerful passion; And shout, ye saints; he comes for your salvation. 4 "Behold my covenant stands forever good, "Seal'd by th' eternal sacrifice in blood, "And sign'd with all their names; the Greek, the Jew "That paid the antient worship or the new. There's no distinction here; join all your voices, And raise your heads, ye saints. for heaven rejoices. 5 "Here (saith the Lord) ye angels spread their thrones, "And near me seat my favourites and my sons, "Come, my redeem'd, possess the joys prepar'd "Ere time began, 'tis your divine reward. When Christ returns, wake every cheerful passion; And shout, ye saints, he comes for your salvation. Pause the First. 6 "I am the Saviour, I th' almighty God, "The sovereign Judge: ye heavens proclaim abroad "My just eternal sentence, and declare "Those awful truths, that sinners dread to hear. When God appears all nature shall adore him, While sinners tremble, saints rejoice before him. 7 "Stand forth, thou bold blasphemer, and profane, "Now feel my wrath, nor call my threatnings vain; "Thou hypocrite, once drest in saint's attire, "I doom the painted hypocrite to fire. Judgement proceeds; hell trembles; heaven rejoices; Lift up your heads, ye saints, with cheerful voices. 8 "Not for the want of goats, or bullocks slain "Do I condemn thee; bulls and goats are vain "Without the flames of love; in vain the store "Of brutal offerings that were mine before. Earth is the Lord's, all nature shall adore him; While sinners tremble, saints rejoice before him. 9 "If I were hungry, would I ask thee food? "When did I thirst or drink thy bullocks blood? "Mine are the tamer beasts and savage breed, "Flocks, herds, and fields, and forests where they feed. All is the Lord's, he rules the wide creation; Gives sinners vengeance, and the saints salvation. 10 "Can I be flatter'd with thy cringing bows, "Thy solemn chatterings and fantastic vows? "Are my eyes charm'd thy vestments to behold "Glaring in gems, and gay in woven gold? God is the judge of hearts, no fair disguises Can screen the guilty when his vengeance rises. Pause the Second. 11 "Unthinking wretch! how could'st thou hope to please "A God, a spirit, with such toys as these? "While with my grace and statutes on thy tongue "Thou lov'st deceit, and dost thy brother wrong. Judgement proceeds; hell trembles; heaven rejoices; Lift up your heads, ye saints, with cheerful voices. 12 "In vain to pious forms thy zeal pretends; "Thieves and adulterers are thy chosen friends; "While the false flatterer at mine altar waits, "His harden'd soul divine instruction hates. GOD is the judge of hearts, no fair disguises Can screen the guilty when his vengeance rises. 13 "Silent I waited with long-suffering love; "But didst thou hope that I should ne'er reprove? "And cherish such an impious thought within, "That the All-Holy would indulge thy sin? See God appears, all nations join t' adore him; Judgement proceeds, and sinners fall before him. 14 "Behold my terrors now; my thunders roll, "And thy own crimes affright thy guilty soul; "Now like a lion shall my vengeance tear "Thy bleeding heart, and no deliverers near. Judgement concludes; hell trembles; heaven rejoices; Lift up your heads, ye saints, with cheerful voices. Epiphonema. 15 "Sinners, awake betimes; ye fools be wise, "Awake before this dreadful morning rise; "Change your vain thoughts, your sinful works amend, "Fly to the Saviour, make the Judge your friend. "Then join, ye saints, wake every cheerful passion; "When Christ returns, he comes for your salvation. Scripture: Psalm 50

Vengeance belongs to thee, O GOD

Appears in 5 hymnals Topics: Prophecies Predictions of God's Judgment upon the Ungodly and Wicked Lyrics: 1 Vengeance belongs to thee, O GOD, Thy Justice now disclose; Arise, thou Judge of all the Earth, And crush thy haughty Foes: How long, O LORD, shall sinful Men, Their solemn Triumphs make? How long their wicked Actions boast, And insolently speak? 2 Not only they thy Saints oppress, But unprovok'd, they spill The Widow's and the Stranger's Blood, And helpless Orphans kill: "And yet the LORD shall ne'er perceive, (Profanely thus they speak) "Nor any Notice of our Deeds, "The God of Jacob take." 8 At length, ye stupid Fools, your Wants Endeavour to discern; In Folly will you still proceed, And Wisdom never learn? Can he be deaf who form'd the Ear, Or blind who fram'd the Eye? Shall Earth's great Judge not punish those, Who his known Will defy? 4 He fathoms all the Thoughts of Men, To him their Hearts lie bare; His Eyes survey them all, and see How vain their Counsels are. Part II 5 Blest is the Man whom thou, O LORD, In Kindness dost chastise; And by thy sacred Rules to walk, Most lovingly advise: This Man shall Rest and Safety find. In Seasons of Distress; Whilst GOD prepares a Pit for those, That stubbornly transgress. 6 For GOD will never from his Saints His Favour wholly take; His own Possession and his Lot, He will not quite forsake: The World shall then confess thee just, On all that thou hast done; And those that choose thy upright Ways, Shall in those Paths go on. 7 Who will appear in my Behalf, When wicked Men invade? Or who, when Sinners would oppress, My righteous Cause shall plead? Long since had I in Silence slept, But that the LORD was near, To stay me when I slipt, when sad, My troubled Heart to chear. 8 Wilt thou, who art a GOD most just, Their sinful Throne sustain, Who make the Law a fair Pretence Their wicked Ends to gain? Against the Lives of righteous Men, They form their close Design; And Blood of Innocence to spill, In solemn League combine. 9 But my Defence is firmly plac'd In GOD the LORD most high: He is my Rock, to which I may For Refuge always fly: The LORD shall cause their ill Designs, On their own Heads to fall: He in their Sins shall cut them off, Our GOD shall slay them all. Scripture: Psalm 94 Used With Tune: [Vengeance belongs to thee, O God]

Jerusalem, thou city fair and high

Author: Meyfart Appears in 66 hymnals Topics: Judgment and Eternity Lyrics: 1 Jerusalem, thou city fair and high, Would God I were in thee! My longing heart fain, fain to thee would fly, It will not stay with me; Far over vale and mountain, Far over field and plain, It hastes to seek its Fountain, And quit this world of pain. 2 O happy day, and yet far happier hour, When wilt thou come at last? When fearless to my father's love and power, Whose promise standeth fast, My soul I gladly render, For surely will His hand Lead her with guidance tender To heaven, her fatherland. 3 A moment's space, and gently, wondrously, Released from earthly ties, The fiery car shall bear her up to thee, Through all these lower skies, To yonder shining regions, While down to meet her come The blessed angel legions, And bid her welcome home. 4 O Zion, hail! Bright city, now unfold The gates of grace to me! How many a time I longed for thee of old, Ere yet I was set free From yon dark life of sadness, Yon world of shadowy naught, And God had given gladness, The heritage I sought. 5 O what array, O what a glorious host Comes sweeping swiftly down? The chosen ones on earth who wrought the most, The Church's brightest crown, Our Lord hath sent to meet me, As in the far off years Their words oft came to greet me In yonder land of tears. 6 The Partiarchs' and prophets' noble train, With all Christ's followers true, Who bore the cross, and patient did sustain That tyrants dared to do, I see them shine forever, All glorious as the sun, 'Mid light that fadeth never, Their perfect freedom won. 7 And when within that lovely Paradise At last I safely dwell, From out my soul what songs of bliss shall rise! What joy my tongue shall tell, While happy saints are singing Hosannas o'er and o'er, Pure Hallelujahs ringing Around me evermore. 8 Innumerous choirs before the shining throne Their joyful anthems raise, Till heaven's glad halls are echoing with the tone Of that great hymn of praise, And all its host rejoices, And all its blessed throng Unite their myriad voices In one eternal song.

And am I born to die?

Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 205 hymnals Topics: Holy Spirit The certaintiy of death and Judgment Lyrics: 1 And am I born to die? To lay this body down? And must my trembling spirit fly Into a world unknown? 2 Soon as from earth I go What will become of me? Eternal happiness or wo Must then my portion be! 3 Wak'd by the trumpet's sound, I from my grave must rise, And see the Judge with glory crown'd, And see the flaming skies. 4 How shall I leave my tomb! With triumph or regret! A fearful or a joyful doom, A curse or blessing meet? 5 Will angel bands convey Their brother to the bar? Or devils drag my soul away To meet its sentence there? 6 Who can resolve the doubt That tears my anxious breast? Shall I be with the damn'd cast out, Or number'd with the blest? 7 I must from God be driven, Or with my Saviour dwell; Must come at his command to heaven, Or else depart to hell. 8 I thou that wouldst not have One wretched sinner die, Who diedst thyself, my soul to save From endless misery; 9 Show me the way to shun Thy dreadful wrath severe, That when thou comest on thy throne, I may with joy appear.
