Vain man, on foolish pleasures bent

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 32 hymnals Topics: Mariner's psalm; Psalm for mariners Lyrics: Vain man, on foolish pleasures bent, Prepares for his own punishment; What pains, what loathsome maladies, From luxury and lust arise! The drunkard feels his vitals waste, Yet drowns his health to please his taste; Till all his active powers are lost, And fainting life draws near the dust. The glutton groans, and loathes to eat, His soul abhors delicious meat; Nature, with heavy loads oppressed, Would yield to death to be released. Then how the frighted sinners fly To God for help with earnest cry! He hears their groans, prolongs their breath, And saves them from approaching death. No med'cines could effect the cure So quick, so easy, or so sure; The deadly sentence God repeals, He sends his sovereign word, and heals. O may the sons of men record The wondrous goodness of the Lord! And let their thankful off'rings prove How they adore their Maker's love Scripture: Psalm 107

Now the day is over

Author: Sabine Baring-Gould Appears in 992 hymnals Topics: Mariners Lyrics: 1 Now the day is over, Night is drawing nigh, Shadows of the evening Steal across the sky. Jesus, give the weary Calm and sweet repose; With Thy tenderest blessing May mine eyelids close. 2 Grant to little children Visions bright of Thee; Guard the sailors, tossing On the deep blue sea. Through the long night-watches May Thine angels spread Their white wings above me, Watching round my bed. 3 When the morning wakens, Then may I arise Pure, and fresh, and sinless In Thy holy eyes. Glory to the Father, Glory to the Son, And to Thee, blest Spirit, Whilst all ages run. Amen. Used With Tune: MERRIAL

Deliverance from Storms and Shipwreck; or, the Seamen's Song

Appears in 64 hymnals Topics: Psalm for mariners; Psalm for mariners First Line: Would you behold the works of God Lyrics: 1 Would you behold the works of God, His wonders in the world abroad, With the bold mariner, survey The unknown regions of the sea. 2 They leave their native shores behind, And seize the favour of the wind! 'Till God commands, and tempests rise That heave the ocean to the skies. 3 Now to the heavens they mount amain, Now sink to dreadful deeps again; What strange affrights young sailors feel, And like a staggering drunkard reel. 4 When land is far, and death is nigh, Lost to all hope, to God they cry: His mercy hears the loud address, And sends salvation in distress. 5 He bids the winds their wrath assuage, And stormy tempests cease to rage; The gladsome train their fears give o'er, And hail with joy their native shore. 6 Oh may the sons of men record The wondrous goodness of the Lord! Let them their private offerings bring, And in the church his glory sing. Scripture: Psalm 107

Thy works of glory, mighty Lord

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 77 hymnals Topics: Mariner's psalm; Psalm for mariners Lyrics: Thy works of glory, mighty Lord, Thy wonders in the deeps, The sons of courage shall record Who trade in floating ships. At thy command the winds arise, And swell the towering waves; The men astonished mount the skies, And sink in gaping graves. [Again they climb the wat'ry hills, And plunge in deeps again; Each like a tott'ring drunkard reels, And finds his courage vain. Frighted to hear the tempest roar, They pant with flutt'ring breath; And hopeless of the distant shore, Expect immediate death.] Then to the Lord they raise their cries; He bears the loud request, And orders silence through the skies, And lays the floods to rest. Sailors rejoice to lose their fears, And see the storm allayed: Now to their eyes the port appears; There let their vows be paid. 'Tis God that brings them safe to land; Let stupid mortals know That waves are under his command, And all the winds that blow. O that the sons of men would praise The goodness of the Lord! And those that see thy wondrous ways, Thy wondrous love record. Scripture: Psalm 107

Now weigh the anchor, hoist the sail

Author: James Montgomery Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 2 hymnals Topics: Mariners Lyrics: Now weigh the anchor, hoist the sail, Launch out upon the pathless peep, Resolved, however veers the gale, The destin'd port in mind to keep; Through all the dangers of the way, Deliver us, good Lord, we pray. When tempests mingle sea and sky, And winds like lions rage and rend, Ships o'er the mountain-waters fly, Or down unfathom'd depths descend, Though skill avail not, strength decay, Deliver us, good Lord, we pray. If lightnings from embattled clouds Strike, or a spark in secret nurst, From stem to stern, o'er masts and shrouds, Like doomsday's conflagration burst, Amid the fire Thy power display, Deliver us, good Lord, we pray. Through yielding planks, should ocean urge Rude entrance, flooding all below, Speak, ere we founder in the surge-- "Thus far, nor farther shall ye go; 247 Here, ye proud waves, your fury stay:" Deliver us, good Lord, we pray. With cordage snapt, and canvas riven, Through straits thick-strown with rock and shoal, Along some gulph-stream. darkly driven, Fast wedged 'midst icebergs at the pole, Or on low breakers cast away, Deliver us, good Lord, we pray. Save, or we perish--calms or storms, By day, by night, at home, afar, Death walks the waves in all his forms, And shoots his darts from every star; Want, pain, and woe man's path waylay, Deliver us, good Lord, we pray.
