with grief and shame weighed down,
now scornfully surrounded
with thorns, thine only crown:

2 Thy grief and bitter passion
were all for sinners' gain;
mine, mine was the transgression,
but thine the cruel pain.
Lo, here I fall, my Saviour,
turn not from me thy face;
