Ada Blenkhorn

1858 - 1927 Hymnal Number: 210 Author of "In Hymns of Praise" in Deseret Sunday School Songs Ada Jane Blenkhorn Canada 1858-1927 Born in Cobourg, Ontario, the 10th of 11 children, she emigrated with her family to the U.S. In 1884 and settled in Cleveland, OH.. She was raised a Methodist, and began writing hymn lyrics at age 34. A prolific writer of hymn lyrics, she was about to give it up when a friend encouraged her to continue, telling her some soul might be saved by a hymn she would write. She worked for many years as secretary to her brother, Henry's, real estate company. After his death in 1923, she became president of the company. She never married. John Perry

Emily Sullivan Oakey

1829 - 1883 Person Name: Mrs. Emily S. Oakey Hymnal Number: 264 Author of "What Shall the Harvest Be?" in Deseret Sunday School Songs A graduate of Albany Female Academy in New York. Taught rhetoric, composition, and foreign languages there for 24 (or 25) years. Contributed to at least 11 magazines. Published a book of poetry, At the Foot of Parnassus.. Wrote the hymn, “Sowing the Seed” in 1850. Originally published in “a western paper,” altered as it traveled from hand to hand. Popularized by Ira Sankey. Published in Gospel Hymns and Songs. Frequently requested from Edison Records, and recorded by them in 1904. Orson Pratt Huish

1851 - 1932 Person Name: O. P. H. Hymnal Number: 110 Author of "Guide Me to Thee" in Deseret Sunday School Songs Born: September 9, 1851, Blaenavon, Monmouth, Wales. Died: December 4, 1932, Payson, Utah. Buried: Payson, Utah. At age nine, Huish emigrated with his mother and siblings to join his father in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1861, the family went to the Utah Territory and settled in Payson, where Huish worked in farming and ranching as a youth. He later ran general stores times in Moab, Utah; Eugene, Oregon; and Albuquerque, New Mexico. He also opened Huish Drug. Huish was a composer, but was also trained in commercial photography, making some contributions in this field and operating the firm Huish and Hinshaw. They did most of their work in Utah and Arizona. In 1880, Huish formed the "Huish Band" with his brothers Edward, Joseph, Frank, James, and Frederick, and their sister Florette. They traveled throughout the Utah Territory, often performing for dances. Huish had been trained to perform in a band with another Payson resident, John D. Stark. Huish wrote over 300 songs, most of which are unpublished. He also write the Payson High School song, "The Silver and the Green." --www.hymntime.org/tch
