Jesus, Greatest at the Table

Author: Stephen P. Starke Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Appears in 3 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Jesus, greatest at the table, the almighty Son of Man, laid aside his outer clothing, poured some water in a pan; as the twelve lay hushed in silence, he the servant's task began. 2 Marvel how their Lord and Teacher gently taught them not to vie, as he humbly knelt before them, dusty feet to wash and dry; by his tender touch expressing true compassion from on high. 3 Jesus took the role of servant when upon that gruesome span, for all human sin he suffered as a vile and loathsome man; on the cross poured out like water to fulfill the Father's plan. 4 Can we fathom such deep mercy? Do we see what God has done? Who can grasp this great reversal: love that gives his only Son? Christ, the sinless for the sinners, for the many dies the One. 5 Jesus gave to his disciples a commandment that was new: "Show my love to one another, do as I have done for you; all the world will know you love me as you love each other too." Topics: Family of God; Jesus Christ Life of; Love God for Us; Love for each other; Ministry and Service; Suffering of Christ Scripture: John 3:34-35 Used With Tune: JULION

God Is Known among His People

Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Appears in 12 hymnals Lyrics: 1 God is known among his people, every mouth his praises fill; from of old he has established his abode on Zion's hill; there he broke the sword and arrow, bade the noise of war be still. 2 Excellent and glorious are you, with your trophies from the fray; you have slain the mighty warriors, wrapped in sleep of death are they; when your anger once is risen, who can stand in that dread day? 3 When from heav'n your sentence sounded, all the earth in fear was still, while to save the meek and lowly God in judgment wrought his will; e'en the wrath of man shall praise you, your designs it shall fulfil. 4 Vow and pay unto Jehovah, him your God forever own; all men, bring your gifts before him worship him, and him alone; mighty kings obey and fear him, princes bow before his throne. When I heard the Saviour calling

Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Appears in 2 hymnals Lyrics: When I heard the Saviour calling Weary, burdened souls to rest-- "'Tis the voice of love that calleth, I will honour His behest;" And I found repose from sorrow, Leaning on my Saviour's breast. Weary souls, all upward toiling, Have ye sorrow for your care? Wherefore bend beneath the burden Which your Lord will gladly share? He can bear your weight of sorrow, Who the cross to Calvary bare. Seek not rest in worldly promise; Worldly rest hath troubled dreams; Not so true the world's fulfilment, As at first the promise seems. He who tastes the Living Water Thirsts not after other streams. 181 Hear the voice of Jesus calling, Take the burden He bestows, 'Tis a load, the more you bear it, Lighter and yet lighter grows; And at length the faithful bearer Finds an undisturbed repose.

Word of God, When All Was Silent

Author: Herman G. Stuempfle Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: 1 Word of God, when all was silent, Source of all that was to be; With the Father and the Spirit, One throughout eternity: When you spoke the whole creation Came to birth by your decree. 2 Word made flesh, you came among us Sharing all our joy and pain, Helping, healing, living, loving, Lamb of God, for sinners slain: By your body, broken, bleeding, Make creation whole again. 3 Word of Life, raised up in power From the tomb on Easter morn, Victor over death’s dominion, Bringing hope to souls forlorn: Make our lives a new creation By the Spirit’s gift reborn. 4 Word of God, your call, unsilenced, Sounds throughout our passing years, Seeking, probing, penetrating By its truth our doubts and fears: Speak to us until we hear you; Open dulled and deafened ears. 5 Praise the Word for life unending! Praise the Word for truth that heals! Praise the Word that shines where darkness God’s undying love conceals! Praise the Word whose grace incarnate Still the heart of God reveals!

Angels Come On Joyous Pinion

Author: Nicholas le Tourneaux; Isaac Williams Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Appears in 4 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Angels come on joyous pinion, Down the Heav’n’s melodious stair; Triumphing o’er death’s dominion, Up to this our lower air. Christ has risen! Christ has risen! And hath burst the sepulcher. 2 All in vain, the posted station Of the armèd soldiery, All in vain, the faithless nation Set the seal and watches nigh; Ye need not fear, ye need not fear, None can reach where He doth lie! 3 He Himself, from sleep awaking, Who spontaneous bore the gloom, Through the seals, and without breaking, Hath come forth and left the tomb; Death could not hold, death could not hold Him born of a virgin’s womb. 4 Lord, with Thee in daily dying May we die, and with Thee rise; And on earth, ourselves denying, Lift our hearts unto the skies, To sing our God, to sing our God, Three in One, sole Good and Wise. Used With Tune: REGENT SQUARE Text Sources: Paris Breviary, 1736; Tr.: Hymns Translated from the Parisian Breviary (London: J. G. F. & J. Rivington, 1839)
