1856 - 1889 Person Name: خليل اليازجي Author of "يسوع أنت ربي" in كتاب الترانيم الروحية للكنائس الإنجيلية Khalil Yaziji, born in Beirut in 1856, was the youngest of the famous poet Naseef al-Yaziji. He died at an early age in 1889 died due to illness. خليل اليازجي (1856م ـ 1889م) مولده ونشأته: ولد الشيخ خليل اليازجي في بيروت سنة 1856م وهو أصغر أنجال الشيخ ناصيف اليازجي، نشأ بكنف والده في مهد العلم والأدب، وترعرع في بيت علم كبير رأسه الشيخ ناصيف واخوته الشيخان حبيب وإبراهيم والسيدة وردة، وكلهم شعراء وأدباء ومؤلفون، تلقى الشيخ خليل عن والده مبادىء العربية وأخذ عنه فنون الشعر واللغة والإنشاء دخل المدرسة الأميركية في بيروت ودرس العلوم الطبيعية والرياضية وبرع فيها ونظم في مبادئها شعراً يدل على تضلعه منها.

S. W. Partridge

b. 1810 Author of "How Dearly God Must Love Us" in The King's Praises Partridge, Samuel William, publisher of the British Workman and kindred works, is the son of Samuel Partridge, and was born in London Nov. 23, 1810. His hymns were published in his Important Truths in Simple Verse, 1841; Rhymes Worth Remembering, 1848. From the former his popular hymn, "How dearly God must love us" (Flower Services), is taken. Another of his hymns in common use is, "Thou Who hast in mercy blest" (Morning). This is in The Church Sunday School Hymn Book, 1868. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, Appendix, Part II (1907)

Cara B. Evans

1839 - 1925 Author of "The love of Christ constraineth" in The Book of Common Praise Born: December 27, 1839, Ontario, Canada. Cara’s husband was Anglican cleric C. Henry James Evans. In 1881, they were living in Ste. Jerusalem, Québec. In 1901, they were living in St. Laurent, a suburb of Montréal. --www.hymntime.com/tch/ ========================== Evans, Cara (Berford). (1840--January 27, 1925, New York City). Anglican. Surviving records reveal little about her life until her arrival, in middle age, at Montreal with her husband John, a canon of the cathedral there. She about recruiting, and raising money to support, missionaries, especially for northwestern Canada; to this end she dited the Montreal section of the "Letter Leaflet," which aimed at sharing missionaries' letters with the ladies in southern Canada who were paying for them. Here her hymn "The love of Christ constraineth" appeared in 1897; its favour with her readership led to its inclusion in the 1908 and 1938 Book of Common Praise. She also edited for a time the magazine into which the "Letter Leaflet" grew, Living Message. Widowed in 1903, she eventually made her home with her daughter in New York. --Hugh D. Frederick B. Morley

1884 - 1969 Author of "O Church of God, United" in The United Methodist Hymnal Morley, Frederick B. Received his B.A. from Syracuse University and his S.T.B. from Boston University; ordained in the Methodist ministry in 1915. Served churches in New Jersey and the New York metropolitan area, including First Methodist Church, Oceanside, N.Y. --The Hymn Society, DNAH Archives ====================== [Morley] writes a weekly newspaper feature entitled "Rhyme and Reason." Many hymns and poems have come from his pen, the latter initially written for use in the services of his church. b. 1896 Person Name: Charles Joseph Jeffries, 1896-1972 Author of "Speak forth Your word, O Father" in The Irish Presbyterian Hymnbook Jeffries, Sir Charles Joseph. (Beckenham, Kent, UK, 1896--December 10, 1972, Bromley, London). Church of England. Son of C.D. Jeffries. Married Myrtle Bennett, 1921. Graduated Malvern College and Magdalen College, Oxford. Lieutenant, Wilts Regiment, British Army, 1915-1917; Second Class Clerk, Colonial Office, 1917-1920; Principal, Colonial Office, 1920-1930; Assistant Secretary and Establishment Officer, Colonial Office, 1930-1939; Assistant Under-Secretary of State, Colonial Office, 1939-1947; Joint Department Under-Secretary of State, Colonial Office, 1947-1956. Vice president for many years of the United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel; member of the governing board of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge; member of the House of Laity, Anglican Church, 1950-1955. Officer, Order of the British Empire, 1937; Knight Commander of St. Michael and St. George, 1943. He wrote numerous books about Britain's colonial empire, and numerous articles on Christian unity. In his more famous book, Towards the Centre (1958), he described the "Centre" not as Rome, Canterbury, or Jerusalem, but Christ, who draws all men to himself. C. Russell Hurditch

1839 - 1908 Author of "The Atoning Blood" in Melodies of Grace and Truth Hurditch, Charles Russell, was born in Exeter, Dec. 20, 1839. In 1854 he underwent a spiritual change which led him subsequently to undertake religious work in some of the villages of Devonshire, and afterwards to succeed the late Mr. Henry Hull as the Secretary of the Young Men's Christian Association, Stafford Street, London. In 1865 he published The London Hymn Book for Prayer Meetings and Special Services. This was revised in 1880. In 1873 he also publishedThe Enlarged London Hymn Book, a Collection of Hymns for Public, Social, and Private Use. Of the smaller work more than half a million copies have been sold; and of the enlarged book the 86th thousand was issued in 1881. To the first (1865) he contributed Nos. 10 and 11 given below: the rest were published in the second book (1873). 1. Arise, ye saints, arise and sing. God is Light. 2. Arm of the Lord, awake!
