When God the Spirit Came

Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith, b. 1926 Hymnal: Christian Worship #478 (2021) Meter: 6.6.8.6.6.6 Scripture: Acts 2 Lyrics: 1 When God the Spirit came upon his church outpoured in sound of wind and sign of flame, they spread his truth abroad, and, filled with the Spirit, proclaimed that Christ is Lord. 2 What courage, pow'r and grace that youthful church displayed! To those of ev'ry tribe and race they witnessed unafraid, and, filled with the Spirit, they broke their bread and prayed. 3 They saw God's Word prevail, his kingdom still increase, no part of all his purpose fail, no promised blessing cease, and, filled with the Spirit knew love and joy and peace. 4 Their theme was Christ alone, the Lord who lived and died, who rose to his eternal throne at God the Father's side, and, filled with the Spirit the church was multiplied. 5 So to this present hour our task is still the same: in pentecostal love and pow'r his gospel to proclaim and, filled with the Spirit rejoice in Jesus' name. Mark How the Lamb of God's Self-Offering

Author: Carl P. Daw, Jr. Hymnal: The New Century Hymnal #167 (1995) Meter: 9.8.9.8 D Scripture: Acts 2:38-42 Lyrics: 1 Mark how the Lamb of God’s self-offering our human sinfulness takes on In the birth-waters of the Jordan as Jesus is baptized by John. Hear how the voice from heaven thunders, “Lo, this is my beloved Son.” See how in dove-like form the Spirit descends on God’s Anointed One. 2 From this assurance of God’s favor Jesus goes to the wilderness, There to endure a time of testing that readied him to teach and bless. So we, by water and the Spirit baptized into Christ’s ministry, Are often led to paths of service through mazes of adversity. 3 Grant us, O God, the strength and courage to live the faith our lips declare; Bless us in our baptismal calling; Christ’s royal priesthood help us share. Turn us from every false allegiance, that we may trust in Christ alone: Raise up in us a chosen people transformed by love to be your own. Topics: Baptism of Jesus; Discipleship; Jesus Christ Temptation of; Year A Baptism of Jesus; Year A Epiphany 2; Year A Lent 1; Year B Baptism of Jesus; Year B Lent 1; Year C Baptism of Jesus Languages: English Tune Title: RENDEZ À DIEU
