O Lord, Look Down from Heaven, Behold

Author: Martin Luther Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 5 hymnals First Line: O Lord, look down from heav'n, behold Lyrics: 1 O Lord, look down from heav'n, behold, And let Thy pity waken; How few are we within Thy fold, Thy saints by men forsaken! True faith seems quenched on ev'ry hand, Men suffer not Thy Word to stand; Dark times have us o'ertaken. 2 With fraud which they themselves invent Thy truth they have confounded; Their hearts are not with one consent On Thy pure doctrine grounded. While they parade with outward show, They lead the people to and fro, In error's maze astounded. 3 May God root out all heresy And of false teachers rid us Who proudly say: "Now, where is he That shall our speech forbid us? By right or might we shall prevail; What we determine cannot fail; We own no lord and master." 4 Therefore saith God, "I must arise, The poor My help are needing; To Me ascend My people's cries, And I have heard their pleading. For them My saving Word shall fight And fearlessly and sharply smite, The poor with might defending." 5 As silver tried by fire is pure From all adulteration, So thro' God's Word shall men endure Each trial and temptation. Its light beams brighter thro' the cross, And, purified from human dross, It shines through every nation. 6 Defend Thy truth, O God, and stay This evil generation; And from the error of its way Keep Thine own congregation. The wicked everywhere abound And would Thy little flock confound; But Thou art our Salvation. Amen. My God, My Father, While I Stray

Author: Charlotte Elliott Meter: 8.8.8.4 Appears in 573 hymnals Lyrics: 1 My God and Father, while I stray Far from my home in life's rough way, Oh, teach me from my heart to say, "Thy will be done." 2 Tho' dark my path and sad my lot, Let me be still and murmur not, Or breathe the prayer divinely taught, "Thy will be done." 3 What tho' in lonely grief I sigh For friends beloved, no longer nigh, Submissive still would I reply-- "Thy will be done." 4 Tho' Thou hast called me to resign What most I prized, it ne'er was mine; I have but yielded what was Thine-- "Thy will be done." 5 Should grief or sickness waste away My life in premature decay, My Father, still I strive to say, "Thy will be done." 6 Let but my fainting heart be blest With Thy sweet Spirit for its Guest, My God, to Thee I leave the rest-- "Thy will be done." 7 Renew my will from day to day; Blend it with Thine and take away All that now makes it hard to say, "Thy will be done." 8 Then, when on earth I breathe no more, The prayer, oft mixed with tears before, I'll sing upon a happier shore, "Thy will be done." Amen. Topics: Sanctification (The Christian Life) New Obedience Scripture: Matthew 26:42 Used With Tune: ES IST KEIN TAG

Lord, We Confess Our Numerous Faults

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 119 hymnals First Line: Lord, we confess our num'rous faults Lyrics: 1 Lord, we confess our num'rous faults; How great our guilt has been! Foolish and vain were all our tho'ts, And all our lives were sin. 2 But, O my soul, forever praise, Forever love His name, Who turns thy feet from dang'rous ways Of folly, sin, and shame. 3 ’Tis not by works of righteousness Which our own hands have done, But we are saved by God's free grace Abounding thro' His Son. 4 ’Tis from the mercy of our God That all our hopes begin; ’Tis by the Water and the Blood Our souls are washed from sin. 5 ’Tis through the purchase of His death Who hung upon the tree, The Spirit is sent down to breathe On such dry bones as we. 6 Raised from the dead, we live anew; And, justified by grace, We shall appear in glory, too, And see our Father’s face. Amen. Topics: Faith and Justification Scripture: Titus 3:3 Used With Tune: ST. FLAVIAN

Lord, When We Bend Before Thy Throne

Author: Joseph D. Carlyle Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 328 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Lord, when we bend before Thy throne, And our confessions pour, Teach us to feel the sins we own, And hate what we deplore. 2 Our broken spirits pitying see, True penitence impart; Then let a kindling glance from Thee Beam hope upon the heart. 3 When our responsive tongues essay Their grateful hymns to raise, Grant that our souls may join the lay And mount to Thee in praise. 4 When we disclose our wants in prayer, May we our wills resign And not a thought our bosom share Which is not wholly Thine. 5 May faith each meek petition fill And waft it to the skies; And teach our hearts 'tis goodness still That grants it or denies. Amen. Topics: Adoration Worship and Praise Scripture: Psalm 32:1 Used With Tune: ST. FLAVIAN

Oh, Worship the King

Author: Robert Grant Meter: 5.5.5.5.6.5.6.5 Appears in 1,170 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Oh, worship the King, All-glorious above, Oh, gratefully sing His pow'r and His love, Our Shield and Defender, The Ancient of Days, Pavilioned in splendor And girded with praise. 2 Oh, tell of His might, Oh, sing of His grace, Whose robe is the light, Whose canopy space! His chariots of wrath The deep thunderclouds form, And dark is His path On the wings of the storm. 3 This earth, with its store Of wonders untold, Almighty, Thy pow'r Hath founded of old, Hath stablished it fast By a changeless decree, And round it hath cast, Like a mantle, the sea. 4 Thy bountiful care What tongues can recite? It breathes in the air, It shines in the light, It streams from the hills, It descends to the plain, And sweetly distills In the dew and the rain. 5 Frail children of dust And feeble as frail, In Thee do we trust, Nor find Thee to fail. Thy mercies, how tender, How firm to the end, Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend! 6 O measureless Might, Ineffable Love, While angels delight To hymn Thee above, Thy humbler creation, Though feeble their lays, With true adoration Shall sing to Thy praise. Amen. Topics: Adoration Worship and Praise Scripture: Psalm 104 Used With Tune: HANOVER
