Our Fathers, LORD, repeatedly

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #XLIV (1767) Topics: Prayers Of the Church for her Deliverance in Persecution Lyrics: 1 Our Fathers, LORD, repeatedly Have told in our attentive Ears, The mighty Wonders, thou hast done In Times more ancient far than theirs: How thou didst plant them by thy Hand, And drove the Heathen from the Land. 2 For not their Courage, nor their Sword, To them this great Possession gave; Nor Strength that from unequal Force, Their fainting Troops could ever save; But thy right Hand, which they implor'd, Thy Presence which they still ador'd. 3 As thee their GOD our Fathers own'd, So thou art now our sov'reign King; Oh therefore, as thou didst to them, To us thy kind Deliv'rance bring; For thro' thy Name, our Foes we quell, Whene'er against us they rebel. 4 I'll neither trust my Bow, nor Sword, When I in Battles fierce engage; But thee, who hast our Foes subdu'd, And put to shame their spiteful Rage: In GOD, from whom the Conquest came, We will rejoice and bless his Name. 5 But thou hast cast us off, and now Most shamefully we're forc'd to yield; For Thou no more vouchsaf'st to lead, Our vanquish'd Armies to the Field; To ev'ry Foe we turn in Fight, And with our Spoil they feast their Spite. 6 To Slaughter doom'd, we fall like Sheep Into their butch'ring Hands; Or what's more wretched yet, survive Dispers'd throughout the Heathen Lands; Thy People thou valu'd low, That their Disgrace may greater grow. 7 Reproach'd by all the Neighbours round, The Heathen's By-word we are grown, Whose Scorn of us, is both in Speech, And in provoking Gestures shewn: My Face in conscious Shame I hide, Whilst they blaspheme in haughty Pride. 8 On us this Heap of Woes is fall'n, All this Disgrace we have endur'd, Yet have not, LORD, renounc'd thy Name, Or Faith to thee, out GOD abjur'd; But in thy Paths have kept with Care; Tho' brought to Danger and Despair. 9 Could we, forgetting thy great Name, Oh LORD, on other GODs rely, And not the Searcher of all Hearts, The treach'rous Crime at once descry? For thee we daily Wrongs sustain, And are like Sheep doom'd to be slain. 10 Awake, arise, let seeming Sleep No longer thee, our GOD, detain; Nor let us, LORD, who sue for Aid, Forever sue to thee in vain; But hasten thou to our Relief, And let thy Presence banish Grief. 11 Oh wherefore hidest thou thy Face, From our afflicted ruin'd State? Whose Souls and Bodies sink to Earth, Beneath our Grief's oppressive WeightL Up, LORD, and us in Safety take! Oh help us for thy Mercie's Sake! Since Godly Men are eve'ry Day decreasing

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #XII (1767) Topics: Prayers Of the Church for her Deliverance in Persecution Lyrics: 1 Since Godly Men are ev'ry Day decreasing, Do thou, O LORD, my righteous Cause defend; These wretched Times are to my Soul displeasing, They scarce afford one just and faithful Friend. 2 One Neighbour now can scarce believe another Or trust in any Thing he doth impart; With flatt'ring Lips each Man deceives his Brother, And oft ensnares him with a double Heart. 3 But faithless Lips with treach'rous Words abounding, The LORD will not permit to prosper long; His awful Vengeance them with Fear confounding, Shall sudden strike the proud blaspheming Tongue. 4 In vain are still those foolish Boasters saying, "We'll freely talk, our Tongues are sure our own? "With doubtful Words the Innocent betraying, "We'll still go on and be controul'd by none." 5 For GOD, who always hears the Poor distressed, And all their Sorrow and Affliction knows, Shall soon arise, their Wrongs shall be redressed; He gives them Rest in spite of all their Foes. 6 Their Hopes are sure who have on GOD relied, His Word shall stand, and void of Falshood be; Like Silver, sev'n times in the Furnace tried, Still pure remains from drossy Mixture free. 7 GOD keeps the Righteous from this Generation; Thou for their Safety ever will provide; When vilest Man rise to the highest Station, The Wicked then exult on ev'ry Side. Scripture: Psalm 12 Languages: English Tune Title: [Since godly men are every day decreasing]

The heathen hosts, O God

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #LXXIX (1767) Topics: Prayers Of the Church for her Deliverance in Persecution Lyrics: 1 The Heathen Hosts, O GOD! Have thy Possession seiz'd; Thy sacred House defil'd, Thy holy City raz'd. The Bodies of thy Saints, Abroad unburied lay; Their Flesh expos'd to Beasts, Or rav'nous Birds a Prey. 2 Their Blood, like Water, was Around Jerus'lem shed; And none were left to pay The Duties to the Dead: The Foe our small Remains With loud Reproaches wound; And are made the Sport Of all the Nations round. 3 How long wilt thou be wrathj? LORD, must we ever mourn? And shall thy jealous Rage, Like Fire for ever burn? Our Lands that know not thee, Thy heavy Vengeance show'r; Those Kingdoms let it crush, That have not own'd thy Pow'r. 4 Their hungry Jaws have prey'd On Jacob's chosen Race; And to a Desart turn'd, Their fruitful Dwelling Place. O think not on our Sins, But speedily prevent The Ruin of thy Saints, Almost with Sorrow spent. 5 Thy Help, O GOD, impart And free our Souls from Blame, So shall thy wond'rous Love Exalt thy glorious Name. Let Infidels that say, "Where is the GOD they boast"? In Vengeance, for thy Saints, Perceive thee to their Cost. 6 LORD, hear the Pris'ner's Moans! Thy saving Pow'r extend; Preserve them, doom'd to die, From their untimely End! Those who blaspheme thy Name, Do thou, O GOD, destroy; Against the Nations round, Resistless Pow'r employ. 7 For they have us opprest; Then let them be repaid, With Sorrows sev'n Times more Than what on us they laid. So we thy humble Flock, Shall ever praise thy Name; And our unwearied Thanks, From Age to Age proclaim. Scripture: Psalm 79 Languages: English Tune Title: [The Heathen Hosts, O God]

Thy Mercies, LORD, shall be my Song

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #LXXXIX (1767) Topics: Prayers Of the Church for her Deliverance in Persecution Lyrics: 1 Thy Mercies, LORD, shall be my Song; My Song on them shall ever dwell; To Ages yet unborn my Tongue Thy never-failing Truth shall tell. 2 I have affirm'd and still maintain, Thy Mercy shall for ever last; Thy Truth that does the Heav'ns sustain, Like them shall stand for ever fast. 3 Thus spak'st thou by thy Prophet's Voice: "With David I a League have made; "To him, my Servant, and my Choice, "By solemn Oath this Grant convey'd: 4 "While Earth, and Seas, and Skies endure, "Thy Seed shall in my Sight remain; "To them thy Throne I will ensure; "They shall to endless Ages reign." 5 For such stupendous Truth and Love, Both Heav'n and Earth just Praises owe, By Choirs of Angels sung above, And by assembled Saints below. 6 What Seraph of celestial Birth To vie with Israel's GOD shall dare? Or who among the Gods of Earth, With our Almighty LORD compare? 7 With Rev'rence and religious Dread, His Saints should to his Temple press; His Fear thro' all their Hearts should spread, Who his Almighty Name confess. 8 LORD GOD of Armies, who can boast Of Strength or Pow'r, like thine renown'd; Of such a num'rous Faithful Host, As that which does thy Throne surround? 9 Thou dost the lawless Sea controul, And change the prospect of the Deep; Thou mak'st the sleeping Billows roll, Thou mak'st the rolling Billows sleep. 10 Thou brak'st in Pieces Rahab's Pride, And did'st op0pressing Pow'r disarm: Thy scatter'd Foes have dearly try'd The Force of thy resistless Arm. 11 In the, the sov'reign Right remains Of Earth and Heav'n; thee, Lord, alone The World and all that it contains, Their Maker and Preserver own. 12 The Poles on which the Globe does rest, Were form'd by thy creating Voice; Tabor and Hermon, East and West In thy sustaining Pow'r rejoice. 13 Thy Arm is mighty, strong thy Hand, Yet, LORD, thou dost with Justice reign; Posses'd of absolute Command, Thou Truth and Mercy dost maintain. 14 Happy, thrice happy they, who hear Thy sacred Trumpet's joyful Sound; Who may at Festivals appear, With thy most glorious Presence crown'd. 15 Thy Saints shall always be o'erjoy'd, Who on thy sacred Name rely; And, in thy Righteousness employ'd, Above their Foes be rais'd on high. 16 For in thy Strength they shall advance, Whose Conquests from thy Favour spring: The LORD of Hosts is our Defence, And Israel's GOD our Israel's King. 17 Thus spak'st thou by thy Prophet's Voice; "A mighty Champion I will send, "From Judah's Tribe have I made Choice "Of one who shall the rest defend. 18 "My Servant David I have found, "With holy Oil anointed him; "Him shall the Hand support that crown'd, "And guard that gave the Diadem. 19 "No Prince from him shall Tribute force, "No Son of Strife shall him annoy; "His spiteful Foes I will disperse, "And them before his Face destroy. 20 "My Truth and Grace shall him sustain; "His Armies, in well order'd Ranks, "Shall conquer, from the Tyrian Main, "To Tigris and Euphrates' Banks. 21 "Me for his Father he shall take, "His GOD and Rock of Safety call; "Him I my first-born Son will make, "And eartnly Kings his Subjects all. 22 "To him my Mercy I'll secure, "My Cov'nant make for ever fast. 29 "His Seed for ever shall endure; "His Throne 'till Heav'n dissolves shall last. Part II 23 "But if his Heirs my Law forsake, "And from my sacred Precepts stray; "If they my righteous Statutes break, "Nor strictly my Commands obey; 24 "Their Sins I'll visit with a Rod, "And for their Folly make them smart; "Yet will not cease to be their GOD, "Nor from my Truth, like them, depart. 25 "My Cov'nant I will ne'er revoke; "But in Remembrance fast retain; "The Thing that once my Lips have spoke, "Shall in eternal Force remain. 26 "Once have I sworn, but once for all, "And made my Holiness the Tie, "That I my Grant will ne'er recal, "Nor to my Servant David lie. 27 "Whose Throne and Race the constant Sun, "Shall, like his Course, establish'd see; "Of this, my Oath, thou conscious Moon, "In Heav'n my faithful Witness be." 28 Such was thy gracious Promise, LORD; But thou hast now our Tribes forsook, Thy own Anointed hast abhorr'd, And turn'd on him thy wrathful Look. 29 Thou seemest to have render'd void, The Cov'nant with thy Servant made: Thou hast his Dignity destroy'd, And in the Dust his Honour laid. 30 Of strong Holds thou hast him bereft, And brought his Bulwarks to decay; His frontier Coasts defenceeless left, A public Scorn, and common Prey. 31 His Ruin does glad Triumphs yield To Foes advanc'd by Thee to Might; Thou hast his conqu'ring Sword unsteel'd, His Valour turn'd to shameful Flight. 32 His Glory is to Darkness fled, His Throne is levll'd with the Ground; His Youth to wretched Bondage led, With Shame o'erwhelm'd and Sorrow drown'd. 33 How long shall we thy Absence mourn? Wilt thou for ever, LORD, retire? Shall thy consuming Anger burn, 'Till that and we at once expire? 34 Consider, LORD, how short a Space Thou dost for mortal Life ordain; No Method to prolong the Race, But loading it with Grief and Pain. 35 What Man is he that can controul Death's strict unalterable Doom? Or rescue from the Grave his Soul, The Grave that must Mankind intomb? 36 LORD, where's thy Love, thy boundless Grace, The Oath to which thy Truth did seal; Consign'd to David and his Race, The Grant which Time should ne'er repeal? 37 See how thy Servants treated are With Infamy, Reproach and Spite, Which in my silent Breast I bear From Nations of licentious Might. 38 How they reproaching thy great Name, Have made thy Servants Hope their Jest: Yet thy just praises we'll proclaim, And ever sing, the LORD be blest. When I pour out my Soul in Pray'r

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #CII (1767) Topics: Prayers Of the Church for her Deliverance in Persecution Lyrics: 1 When I pour out my Soul in Pray'r, Do thou, O LORD, incline thine Ear; And let my sad Cry ascend, To thee, my only Friend: Hide not thy Face from my Distress, Do thy my Sorrows soon redress; And when I call on thee, Vouchsafe to comfort me. 2 My Days like scatter'd Smoke expire, My Bones consume in constant Fire, My Heart is parch'd with Heat, And I forget to eat: By Reason of repeated Groans, My Flesh will scarce cleave to my Bones; Like mournful Owls, am I, That through the Desarts cry. 3 I watch, and like a Sparrow mourn, That on the House-top sits forlorn; My Foes revile all Day, And Snares in secret lay. Ashes I've eat, oppress'd with Fears, My Drink is mix'd with briny Tears; Because thy Wrath doth lie, On me, once seated high. 4 My Days are like an Ev'ning Shade, And like a drooping Flow'r I fade; But LORD, thy glorious Name, For ever is the same: Thou shalt disperse thy Sion's Gloom, For now her Days of Mercy's come; Because it grieves the Just. To see her laid in Dust. 5 The Heathen Kings his Name shall fera, When Sion shall restor'd appear; When him the Poor address, And he their Pray'r shall bless: This shall be written on Record That those to come may praise the LORD; That future Nations may, His mignty Acts display. 6 For from his holy Dwelling Place, The LORD survey'd the human Race, That he might hear the Cry, Of Wretches doom'd to die. His mighty Arm did interpose, To release them from all their Foes, And set the Mourners free, From long Captivity. 7 That thro' glad Sion they might sing, His Praise, who did Deliv'rance bring; And at Jerusalem Adore his gracious Name. When all the Tribes assembling there, And Kingdoms joining in the Pray'r, To him their Vows address, And GOD their LORD confess. 8 But at his Wrath my Life decays, His Hand cuts short my hopeful Days; And allmy Strength is gone, E'er yet my Race is run; LORD, end not thus my Years, said I, When scarcely half have passed by; But thou from Change secure, Shalt evermore endure. 9 The Earth's Foundations thou hast laid, Thy Hands the lofty Heav'ns have made; And they shall pass away, But thou shalt ne'er decay: They all shall like a Garment fail, And Time shall over them prevail; But thou shalt never waste, Thy Years for ever last. 10 The Children of thy Saints shall stand, Supported by thy pow'rful hand; And in they Sight remain, Whilst thou dost them sustain. When we, our wearied Lmbs to rest

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #CXXXVII (1767) Topics: Prayers Of the Church for her Deliverance in Persecution Lyrics: 1 When we, our wearied Limbs to rest, Sat down by proud Euphrates Stream, We wept, with doleful Thoughts oppress'd, And Sion was our mournful Theme; Our Harps, that when with Joy we sung, Were wont their tuneful Parts to bear, With silent Strings neglected hung, On Willow-Tress that wither'd there. 2 Mean while our Foes, who all conspir'd To triumph in our slavish Wrongs, Music and Mirth of us requir'd, "Come, sing us one of Sion's Songs." How shall we tun our Voice to sing? Or touch our Harps with skilful Hands? Shall Hymns of Joy to GOD our King, Be sung by Slaves in foreign Lands? 3 O Salem, our once happy Seat! When I of thee forgetful prove, Let then my trembling Hand forget, The speaking Strings with Art to move. If I to mention thee forbear, Eternal Silence seize my Tongue. Or if I sing one chearful Aire, 'Till thy Deliv'rance is my Song. 4 Remember, LORD, how Edom's Race, In thy own City's fatal Day, Cry'd out, "Her stately Wills deface, "And with the Ground quite level lay." Proud Babel's Daughter, doom'd to be Of Grief and Woe the wretched Prey, Bless'd is the Man, who shall to thee, The Wrongs thou laid'st on us, repay. 5 Thrice bless'd, who with just Rage possess'd, And deaf to all the Parents Moans, Shall snatch thy Infants from the Breast, And dash their Heads against the Stones. Scripture: Psalm 137 Languages: English Tune Title: [When we, our wearied Limbs to rest]

Brother, dear brother

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #X (1767) Topics: Prayers Of the Church for her Deliverance in Persecution First Line: Why dost thou now withdraw thy Presence, LORD! Lyrics: 1 Why dost thou now withdraw thy Presence, LORD! Why hidest thou thy Face in my Distress? Why wilt thou not thy wonted Aid afford, When Sorrows deep my trouble Soul oppress? Behold the Heathen, swell'd with Haughtiness, Have with deceitful Wiles the Poor annoyed; But in their Treach'ry let them be destroyed. 2 Triumphant they rejoice, with Pride elate, To see Success their ill Designs attend: And still the sordid Wretch, whom thou dost hate, With Insolence perversly they commend, And for supreme Authority contend: Their stubborn Minds all higher Pow'r disdaining, And in their Hearts no Thoughts of GOD retaining. 3 Oppressive Ways they eagerly pursue, And with contemptuous Scorn their Foes they slight; Because thy Judgments, tho' for ever true Are unobserv'd, and far above their Sight: Deluded, still they think their Actions right; And as thy Vengeance hath not yet distress'd them, They think no Troubles ever shall molest them. 4 Their Words are nought but Treach'ry and Deceit; Their Mouths with Curses fill'd and sland'rous Lies; The wicked Purposes they would compleat, Are always cover'd with a fair Disguise; Near publick Roads they lurk, that by Surprize The Poor and Innocent may be destroyed; Thus is their Art and Malice still employed. 5 Not watchful Lions, lurking in their Den, With greater Fierceness catch their heedless Prey Than these Deceivers take unwary Men; Or threat them, taken, with more Rage than they: Sometimes a deeming Homage they will pay, A humble Look and harmless Aspect wearing; Thus are the Poor deceiv'd, no Danger fearing. 6 They in their Hearts have said, "God hath forgot; "The LORD will not our wicked Actions see: "He doth not heed our deep designed Plot; "So shall the Innocent ensnared be." Arise, O LORD, the Poor from Danger free! Thy mighty Arm against thy Foes extending, Thy humble People from all Harm defending. 7 But why is GOD contemn'd by wicked Men? Because in Pride presumtuously they say, "The LORD regards us no; he never can "Call to account, and our Misdeeds repay:" But thou wilt try all those who go astray: And when the Poor and Orphans are distressed, They look to thee alone to be redressed. 8 Defenceless let the Evil-minded fall, While all their boasted Strength proves but in vain; Ev'n in their dark Designs destroy them all, Till none of all their num'rous Race remain: Thy just Dominion, LORD, assert again; That from thy chosen Land may be expelled, All those who have against thy Pow'r rebelled. 9 Thou always dost thos humble Suppliants hear, That prostrate fall before thy sacred Throne: Thou dost at first incline their Hearts to Pray'r, Then grantest what thy ask; for thou alone Canst help the Fatherless and Poor undone: So shall the earthly Tyrants be destroyed. Who have their Craft against thy Saints employed. Scripture: Psalm 10 Tune Title: [Why dost thou now withdraw thy presence, Lord]

Will God for ever cast us off?

Hymnal: Church Hymn Book #P.LXXIV (1816) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: The Church pleading with God under sore Persecution Lyrics: 1 Will God for ever cast us off? His wrath for ever smoke Against the people of His love, His little chosen flock. 2 Think of the tribes so dearly bought With their Redeemer’s blood; Nor let thy Zion be forgot, Where once thy glory stood. 3 Lift up thy feet, and march in haste, Aloud our ruin calls; See what a wide and fearful waste Is made within thy walls. 4 Where once thy churches pray'd & sang Thy foes profanely rage; Amid thy gates their ensigns hang, And there their hosts engage. 5 How are the seats of worship broke? They tear the buildings down, And he that deals the heaviest stroke, Procures the chief renown. 6 With flames they threaten to destroy Thy children in their rest; Come, let us burn at once, they cry, The temple and the priest. 7 And still, to heighten our distress, Thy presence is withdrawn; Thy wonted signs of pow'r and grace, Thy pow'r and grace are gone. 8 No prophet speaks to calm our grief, But all in silence mourn; Nor know the times of our relief The hour of thy return. 9 How long, eternal God, how long Shall men of pride blaspheme? Shall saints be made their endless song, And bear immortal shame? 10 Canst thou for ever sit and hear Thine holy name profan'd? And still thy jealousy forbear, And still withhold thine hand? 11 What strange deliv'rance hast thou shown In ages long before? And now no other God we own, No other God adore. 12 Thou didst divide the raging sea By thy resistless might, To make thy tribes a wond'rous way, And then secure their flight. 13 Is not the world of nature thine, The darkness and the day; Didst thou not bid the morning shine, And mark the sun his way? 14 Hath not thy pow'r form'd ev'ry coast, And set the earth its bounds, With summer’s heat, and winter’s frost, In their perpetual rounds? 15 And shall the sons of earth and dust That sacred pow'r blaspheme? Will not thy hand that form'd them first Avenge thine injur'd name? 16 Think on the cov'enant thou hast made, And all thy words of love; Nor let the birds of prey invade, And vex thy trembling dove. 17 Our foes would triumph in our blood, And make our hope their jest; Plead thy own cause, almighty God, And give thy children rest.
