Lord, and whither shall we go?

Author: Robert Montgomery Appears in 3 hymnals Topics: Advent, Third Sunday Lyrics: 1 Lord, and whither shall we go? Thou alone hast words of life! In our stormy griefs below, Who, but Thou, can heal the strife Sin and sorrow round us being, In life's vale while wandering? 2 Blessed Christ! embodied Word! Thou alone art Life and Light: Saints who have Thy truth preferred Walk in peace, and worship right: Thou alone to sin canst say, "I am Love, the Living Way." 3 Sun of Grace, O ever shine Round our paths, where'er they lead! Midnight feels a ray divine Breaking through the darkest need, If we hear, when most dismayed, "It is I, be not afraid!" 4 Pardon, peace, and purity, Gifts without, and grace within, Love and light which set us free From the curse and chain of sin-- These, Emmanuel, Thou canst give, While upon Thy words we live. 5 Not a want, Thou canst not fill; Not a fear, Thou wilt not tame; If, indeed, repentance will Rest upon Thy glorious Name, High o'er every guilt and grave Shall Redemption's banner wave! 6 Saviour, be our Polar Star, Shaded by no sinful night; Shed upon us from afar Living beams of holy light: When we reach our radiant home, We shall know the Way we come. Used With Tune: ST. NINIAN

Love's redeeming work is done

Author: Charles Wesley, 1707-1788 Meter: 7.7.7.7 Appears in 24 hymnals Topics: Third Sunday Before Advent Year C Lyrics: 1 Love's redeeming work is done; fought the fight, the battle won: lo, our Sun's eclipse is o'er, lo, he sets in blood no more. 2 Vain the stone, the watch, the seal; Christ has burst the gates of hell; death in vain forbids his rise; Christ has opened paradise. 3 Lives again our glorious King; where, O death, is now thy sting? dying once, he all doth save; where thy victory, O grave? 4 Soar we now where Christ has led, following our exalted Head; made like him, like him we rise; ours the cross, the grave, the skies. 5 Hail the Lord of earth and heaven! Praise to thee by both be given: thee we greet triumphant now; hail, the Resurrection Thou! Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:54-57 Used With Tune: SAVANNAH

He Comes to Us As One Unknown

Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith (1926-); Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965) Meter: 8.6.8.8.6 Appears in 10 hymnals Topics: Call and Vocation; Advent; Easter (third Sunday); Salvation/Redemption Lyrics: 1 He comes to us as one unknown, a breath unseen, unheard; as though within a heart of stone, or shriveled seed in darkness sown, a pulse of being stirred. 2 He comes when souls in silence lie and thoughts of day depart, half-seen upon the inward eye, a falling star across the sky of night within the heart. 3 He comes to us in sound of seas, the ocean's fume and foam; yet small and still upon the breeze, a wind that stirs the tops of trees, a voice to call us home. 4 He comes in love as once he came by flesh and blood and birth; to bear within our mortal frame a life, a death, a saving name for every child of earth. 5 He comes in truth when faith is grown; believed, obeyed, adored: the Christ in all the Scriptures shown, as yet unseen, but not unknown, our Saviour and our Lord. Scripture: Genesis 1:1-5 Used With Tune: LOBT GOTT, IHR CHRISTEN Text Sources: The Quest of the Historical Jesus, 1910

If Christ had not been raised from death

Author: Christopher Idle (b. 1938) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 7 hymnals Topics: The Third Sunday before Advent Year C Lyrics: 1 If Christ had not been raised from death our faith would be in vain, our preaching but a waste of breath, our sin and guilt remain. But now the Lord is risen indeed; he rules in earth and heaven: his gospel meets a world of need — in Christ we are forgiven. 2 If Christ still lay within the tomb then death would be the end, and we should face our final doom with neither guide nor friend. But now the Saviour is raised up, so when a Christian dies we mourn, yet look to God in hope — in Christ the saints arise! 3 If Christ had not been truly raised his Church would live a lie; his name should nevermore be praised, his words deserve to die. But now our great Redeemer lives; through him we are restored: his word endures, his Church revives in Christ, our risen Lord. Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:12-20 Used With Tune: KINGSFOLD
