Glory be to Jesus

Author: E. Caswall (1814-1878) Hymnal: Hymns for Today's Church (2nd ed.) #126 (1987) Meter: 6.5.6.5 Topics: The Fall Lyrics: 1 Glory be to Jesus, who, in bitter pains, poured for me the life-blood from his sacred veins. 2 Grace and life eternal in that blood I find, blessed be his compassion wonderfully kind! 3 Abel's book for vengeance pleaded to the skies, but the blood of Jesus for our pardon cries. 4 When that blood is sprinkled on our guilty hearts, Satan in confusion terror-struck departs. 5 When this earth exulting lifts its praise on high, angel hosts rejoicing make their glad reply. 6 Raise your thankful voices, swell the mighty flood; louder still and louder praise the Lamb of God! Eternal Light! Eternal Light!

Author: Thomas Binney, 1798-1874 Hymnal: The Irish Presbyterian Hymnbook #166 (2004) Meter: 8.6.8.8.6 Topics: The Fall The Human Condition Lyrics: 1 Eternal Light! Eternal Light! How pure the soul must be, when, placed within Your searching sight, it shrinks not, but with calm delight can face such majesty. 2 The spirits who surround Your throne may bear that burning bliss; but that is surely theirs alone, since they have never, never known a fallen world like this. 3 O how shall I, whose dwelling here is dark, whose mind is dim, before the face of God appear and on my human spirit bear The uncreated beam? 4 There is a way for us to rise to that sublime abode: an offering and a sacrifice, a Holy Spirit’s energies, an advocate with God. 5 Such grace prepares us for the sight of holiness above; those once in ignorance and night can dwell in the eternal Light, through the eternal Love. Lord God, your love has called us here

Author: Brian Wren (born 1936) Hymnal: Hymns for Today's Church (2nd ed.) #480a (1987) Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Topics: The Fall Lyrics: 1 Lord God, your love has called us here as we, by love, for love were made; your living likeness still we bear, though marred, dishonoured, disobeyed. We come, with all our heart and mind your call to hear, your love to find. 2 We come with self-inflicted pains of broken trust and chosen wrong, half-free, half-bound by inner chains, by social forces swept along, by powers and systems close confined yet seeking hope for all humankind. 3 Lord God, in Christ you call our name and then receive us as your own not through some merit, right or claim but by your gracious love alone. We strain to glimpse your mercy-seat and find you kneeling at our feet. 4 Then take the towel, and break the bread, and humble us, and call us friends; suffer and serve till all are fed and show how grandly love intends to work till all creation sings, to fill all worlds, to crown all things. 5 Lord God, in Christ you set us free your life to live, your joy to share: give us your Spirit's liberty to turn from guilt and dull despair, and offer all that faith can do while love is making all things new.
