Thomas H. Troeger

1945 - 2022 Person Name: Thomas H. Troeger, 1945- Scripture: Psalm 105:2-4 Author of "Sing to God as Sings the Ocean" in Community of Christ Sings Thomas Troeger (1945-2022), professor of Christian communication at Yale Divinity school, was a well known preacher, poet, and musician. He was a fellow of Silliman College, held a B.A. from Yale University; B.D. Colgate Rochester Divinity School; S.T. D. Dickinson College, and was awarded an honorary D.D. from Virginia Theological Seminary. He was ordained in the Presbyterian Church in 1970 and the Episcopal Church in 1999, and remained dually aligned with both traditions. Troerger led conferences and lectures in worship and preaching throughout North America, as well as in Denmark, Holland, Australia, Japan, and Africa. He served as national chaplain to the American Guild of Organists, and for at least three years he hosted the Season of Worship broadcast for Cokesbury. He was president of the Academy of Homiletics as well as Societas Homiletica. He had, as of 2009, written 22 books in the areas of preaching, poetry, hymnody, and worship. Many of his hymn texts are found in New Hymns for the Lectionary (Oxford, 1992), and God, You Made All Things for Singing (Oxford, 2009). Laura de Jong

Tom Colvin

1925 - 2000 Scripture: Psalm 105 Author of "We're glad that we belong to you" in Come, Let Us Walk This Road Together Tom Colvin (b. 1925; d. 2000) was trained as an engineer and worked in that profession in Burma and Singapore from 1945 to 1948. After studying theology at Trinity College, Glasgow University, he was ordained in the Church of Scotland in 1954. He served as missionary in Nyasaland (now Malawi) from 1954 to 1958, in Ghana from 1958 to 1964, and again in Nyasaland from 1964 to 1974. His work there included preaching, education, and community development. After completing his missionary work, Colvin became a minister in the United Reformed Church of England and served an inner-city church in London. He returned to Africa in 1984 as a development consultant to the Zimbabwe Christian Council. Colvin's writings include Christ's Work in Free Africa (1964) and three collections of hymns, many written in collaboration with African Christians–Free to Serve (1966), Leap My Soul (1976), and Fill Us with Your Love (1983). Helen L. Wright

b. 1927 Person Name: Helen L. Wright, 1927- Scripture: Psalm 105:1-11 Author of "Sing to God, sing praises" in Together in Song Helen L. Wright (b. 1927) wrote the refrain for the Psalter Task Force of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), for which she served as chair. A native of Baltic, Ohio, Helen Wright is a graduate of the College of Wooster with a B.A. degree in English. For some years she served as treasurer and bookkeeper for her husband's medical corporation. She is an organist for the Presbyterian Church of Coshocton, Ohio, a position she has held for twenty-four years. Wright served on the Advisory Council for discipleship and worship of the United Presbyterian Church U.S.A. prior to the reunion of 1983. --The Presbyterian Hymnal Companion, 1993
