Rise! To Arms! With Prayer Employ You

Author: Wilhelm E. Arends, 1677-1721; John M. Sloan, 1835-after 1890 Appears in 8 hymnals Scripture: Philippians 3:12-14 Lyrics: 1 Rise! To arms! With prayer employ you, O Christians, lest the foe destroy you, for Satan has designed your fall. Wield God's Word, a weapon glorious; against each foe you'll be victorious, for God will set you o'er them all. Fear not the prince of hell, here is Immanuel! Sing hosanna! The strong ones yield to Christ, our shield, and we as conqu'rors hold the field. 2 Cast afar this world's vain pleasure and boldly strive for heav'nly treasure. Be steadfast in the Savior's might. Trust the Lord, who stands beside you, for Jesus from all harm will hide you. By faith you'll conquer in the fight. Take courage, weary soul! Look forward to the goal! Joy waits you. The race, then, run; your battle done, the crown of glory will be won. 3 Jesus, all your children cherish, and keep them that they never perish whom you have purchased with your blood. Let new life to us be given that we may look to you in heaven whenever fearful is our mood. Your Spirit on us pour that we may love you more, hearts o'erflowing; and then shall we, from sin set free, sing praise through all eternity. Topics: Church Militant Used With Tune: WACHET AUF

Let Folly Praise That Fancy Loves

Author: Robert Southwell, 1561-1595 Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 7 hymnals Scripture: Philippians 3:4-16 Lyrics: 1 Let folly praise that fancy loves; I praise and love that child whose heart no thought, whose tongue no word, whose hand no deed defiled. I praise him most, I love him best; all praise and love are his. While him I love, in him I live, and cannot live amiss. 2 Love's sweetest mark, laud's highest theme, our most desired light. To love him life, to leave him death, to live in him delight. He mine by gift, I his by debt, thus each to other due: first friend he was, best friend he is; all times will find him true. 3 Though young, yet wise, though small, yet strong, though man, yet God he is; as wise he knows, as strong he can, as God he loves to bless. His knowledge rules, his strength defends, his love doth cherish all; his birth our joy, his life our light, his death our end of thrall. Topics: Christmas; Epiphany Used With Tune: A PURPLE ROBE

I'm Going On

Naylor Meter: 12.14.12.14 with refrain Appears in 6 hymnals Scripture: Philippians 3:14 First Line: I mean to go right on until the crown is won Refrain First Line: I’m going on, I’m going on Lyrics: 1 I mean to go right on until the crown is won; I mean to fight the fight of faith till life on earth is done. I’ll nevermore turn back, defeat I shall not know, For God will give me victory if onward I shall go. Refrain: I’m going on, I’m going on, Unto the final triumph, I’m going on; I’m going on, I’m going on, Unto the final triumph, I’m going on. 2 Should opposition come, should foes obstruct my way, Should persecution’s fires be lit, as in the ancient day— With Jesus by my side, His peace within my soul, No matter if the battle’s hot, I mean to win the goal. [Refrain] 3 I see a shining crown awaiting over there, I see a mansion all prepared and decked with beauties rare: Shall that which intervenes deprive me of my right? Nay, on I’ll go until I reach that city of delight. [Refrain] 4 Then forward let us go, our hearts with love aflame, Our snowy banner borne aloft, inscribed with Jesus’ name. The hosts of evil flee, and heaven’s open gates Invite me now to hasten where eternal glory waits.
