O Thou, who dost accord us

Author: Anon. Hymnal: The Lutheran Hymnary #356 (1913) Meter: 7.7.6.7.7.8 Lyrics: 1 O Thou, who dost accord us The highest prize and guerdon, Thou hope of all our race, Jesus, do Thou afford us The gift we ask of pardon For all who humbly seek thy face. 2 With whispered accusation Our conscience tells of sinning In thought, and word, and deed; Thine is our restoration, The work of grace beginning For souls from every burden freed. 3 For who, if Thou reject us, Shall raise the fainting spirit? 'Tis thine alone to spare:' If Thou to life elect us, With cleanséd hearts to near it, Shall be our task, our lowly prayer. 4 O Trinity most glorious, Thy pardon free bestowing, Defend us evermore; That in Thy courts victorious, Thy love more truly knowing, We may with all Thy saints adore. O World, See Here Suspended

Author: Anna Hoppe; Paul Gerhardt, 1606-1676 Hymnal: American Lutheran Hymnal #427 (1930) Meter: 7.7.6.7.7.8 Lyrics: 1 O world, see here suspended, His loving arms extended, They Savior on the cross! The Prince of life is willing, All righteousness fulfilling, To suffer anguish, scorn and loss. 2 O Thou, who hearts dost quicken, Why art Thou sorrow-stricken, Why all this nameless pain? While we must make confession Of sin and dire transgression, No sin on Thee hath left a stain. 3 'Tis I whom sins encumber, Whose misdeeds far outnumber The sands upon the shore; I caused Thy condemnation, Thy deep humiliation, And all the wounds that pain Thee sore. 4 The burden Thee molesting, The weight upon Thee resting, The heavy load is mine. A curse on Thee is pressing, That I may reap a blessing; Thy pain to me is balm divine. 5 My bondsman ever willing, My place with patience filling, And sharing all my guilt, A crown of thorns Thou wearest, And my disgrace Thou bearest, While saying, Father, as Thou wilt! 6 Death for a time must hold Thee, The grave, too, must enfold Thee, Lest I should be its prey; Death, who for me had tarried, Death now himself lies buried, And I shall live with Thee for aye. Upon the Cross Extended

Author: Paul Gerhardt, 1607-1676; John Kelly, 1833-1890 Hymnal: Christian Worship #434 (2021) Meter: 7.7.6.7.7.8 Lyrics: 1 Upon the cross extended, see, world, your Lord suspended; your Savior yields his breath. The Prince of life from heaven himself has freely given to shame and blows and bitter death. 2 Who is it, Lord, that bruised you? Who has so sore abused you and caused you all your woe? We all must make confession of sin and dire transgression while you no ways of evil know. 3 I caused your grief and sighing by evils multiplying as countless as the sands. I caused the woes unnumbered with which your soul is cumbered, your sorrows raised by wicked hands. 4 Your soul in griefs unbounded, your head with thorns surrounded, you died to ransom me. The cross for me enduring, the crown for me securing, you healed my wounds and set me free. 5 Your cross I place before me, its saving pow'r restore me, sustain me in the test. It will, when life is ending, be guiding and attending my way to your eternal rest. Topics: Jesus' Passion Scripture: Isaiah 53:4-9 Languages: English Tune Title: O WELT, ICH MUSS DICH LASSEN

O world, I must now leave thee

Author: Johann Hesse; Catherine Winkworth Hymnal: Evangelical Lutheran hymnal #436 (1908) Lyrics: 1 O world, I now must leave thee, But little doth it grieve me, I seek my native land; True life I there inherit, And here I yield my spirit With joy to God's all-gracious hand. 2 So on His Word relying, I know, while I am dying I soon shall see His face, Through Christ whose death hath bought me; The Father's love He brought me, And now prepares for me a place. 3 The grave hath lost its terrors, Since for my sins and errors, My Savior did atone: My works can nought avail me, But His work cannot fail me, I rest in faith on Him alone. 4 And so I hence am going In peace, full surely knowing That now I shall have rest: I feel death's icy finger; My soul here cannot linger, Nor would I stay--to go is best. 5 O world, I yet would teach thee That death will surely reach thee; Thou too must follow me; Then ere God's grace forsake thee, Repent! to Christ betake thee, That God have mercy too on thee. The Prince of Life from heaven Himself hath freely given To shame and blows and bitter death. 2 Come, see these things and ponder, Your soul will fill with wonder As blood streams from each pore. Through grief beyond all knowing From His great heart came flowing Sighs welling from its deepest core. 3 Who is it, Lord, that bruised You? Who has so sore abused You And caused You all Your woe? We all must make confession Of sin and dire transgression While You no ways of evil know. 4 I caused Your grief and sighing By evils multiplying As countless as the sands. The cross for me enduring, The crown for me securing, You healed my wounds and set me free. 6 Your cords of love, my Savior, Bind me to You forever, I am no longer mine. To You I gladly tender All that my life can render And all I have to You resign. 7 Your cross I place before me; Its saving pow'r restore me, Sustain me in the test. It will, when life is ending, Be guiding and attending My way to Your eternal rest. Scripture: Isaiah 53 Languages: English Tune Title: O WELT, ICH MUSS DICH LASSEN

Praise God, This Hour of Sorrow

Author: J. Heerman, 1585-1647; H. A. Brorson, 1694-1764; O. H. Smeby, 1851-1929 Hymnal: Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary #475 (1996) Meter: 7.7.6.7.7.8 Lyrics: 1 Praise God, this hour of sorrow Shall bring a brighter morrow: I go to Paradise. Dear Christian friends together, When round my grave you gather, Lay me to rest with songs of praise. 2 What better can befall me Than that the Lord doth call me From hence, where sin holds sway? Who is on earth a stranger Must ever be in danger, Till God hath closed life's fleeting day. 3 God takes His own from anguish And pain, in which they languish Within this vale of tears, And gives them to inherit The crown that Christ did merit: The joy of heav'n's eternal years. 4 On earth Christ was my treasure, And now I know but pleasure And gone is bitter woe; Believe, whate'er betideth, God's love in all abideth, And soon your tears shall cease to flow. 5 Our days the Lord appointeth, He woundeth and anointeth, He knoweth all things well. No evil He effected, No good He e'er neglected, And all His works His glory tell. 6 When ye shall see me nearing The throne of God, appearing Adorned and crowned bride, My palms of vict'ry swinging, 'Midst Alleluias ringing, I beauteous grace the Lamb beside: 7 Ye then shall rue the sadness That made you weep, and gladness E'er in your hearts shall reign. Who follows where God guideth, And takes what He provideth Shall know release from ev'ry pain. 8 Farewell, I now must leave you; The grief this day doth give you Soon others, too, shall bear. Be ye to God commended; In heav'n all woe is ended, And we shall meet in glory there. Topics: Death and Burial; Trinity 16 Languages: English Tune Title: O WELT, ICH MUSS DICH LASSEN

Now Rest Beneath Night's Shadow

Author: Paul Gerhardt, 1607-76 Hymnal: Lutheran Worship #485 (1982) Meter: 7.7.6.7.7.8 Lyrics: 1 Now rest beneath night's shadow The woodland, field, and meadow; The world in slumber lies. But you, my heart, awaking And prayer and music making, Let praise to your creator rise. 2 The radiant sun has vanished, It's golden rays are banished From dark'ning skies of night; But Christ, the sun of gladness, Dispelling all our sadness, Shines down on us in warmest light. 3 Now all the heav'nly splendor Breaks forth in starlight tender From myriad worlds unknown; And we, this marvel seeing, Forget our selfish being For joy of beauty not our own. 4 Lord Jesus, since you love me, Now spread your wings above me And shield me from alarm. Though Satan would devour me, Let angel guards sing o'er me: This child of God shall meet no harm. 5 My loved ones, rest securely. For God this night will surely From peril guard your heads. Sweet slumbers may he send you And bid his hosts attend you And through the night watch o'er your beds. Topics: Evening Languages: English Tune Title: O WELT, ICH MUSS DICH LASSEN
