Oh, what the joy and the glory must be

Author: Rev. J. M. Neale; P. Abelard Hymnal: The Hymnal, Revised and Enlarged, as adopted by the General Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America in the year of our Lord 1892 #397 (1894) Topics: Burial of the Dead Lyrics: 1 Oh, what the joy and the glory must be, Those endless Sabbaths the blessèd ones see! Crown for the valiant, to weary ones rest; God shall be all, and in all ever blest. 2 What are the Monarch, His court, and His throne? What are the peace and the joy that they own? Oh, that the blest ones, who in it have share, All that they feel could as fully declare! 3 Truly Jerusalem name we that shore, Vision of peace, that brings joy evermore; Wish and fulfillment can severed be ne'er, Nor the thing prayed for come short of the prayer. 4 There, where no troubles distraction can bring, We the sweet anthems of Sion shall sing; While for thy grace, Lord, their voices of praise Thy blessèd people eternally raise. 5 There dawns no Sabbath, no Sabbath is o'er, Those Sabbath-keepers have one evermore; One and unending is that triumph-song Which to the angels and us shall belong. 6 Now, in the meanwhile, with hearts raised on high, We for that country must yearn and must sigh; Seeking Jerusalem, dear native land, Through our long exile on Babylon's strand. 7 Low before Him with our praises we fall, Of Whom, and in Whom, and through Whom are all; Of Whom, the Father; and in Whom, the Son; Through Whom, the Spirit, with Them ever One. Amen. Languages: English Tune Title: [Oh, what the joy and the glory must be]

Brief life is here our portion

Author: Rev. J. M. Neale Hymnal: The Hymnal, Revised and Enlarged, as adopted by the General Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America in the year of our Lord 1892 #406a (1894) Topics: Burial of the Dead Lyrics: 1 Brief life is here our portion, Brief sorrow, short-lived care; The life that knows no ending, The tearless life is there! O happy retribution! Short toil, eternal rest, For mortals and for sinners, A mansion with the blest! 2 There grief is turned to pleasure; Such pleasure as below No human voice can utter, No human heart can know; And after fleshly weakness, And after this world's night, And after storm and whirlwind, Are calm, and joy, and light. 3 And now we fight the battle, But then shall wear the crown Of full and everlasting And passionless renown; But He Whom now we trust in, Shall then be seen and known, And they that know and see Him, Shall have Him for their own. 4 And now we watch and struggle, And now we live in hope, And Sion in her anguish, With Babylon must cope; But there is David's fountain, And life in fullest glory; And there the light is golden, And milk and honey flow. 5 The morning shall awaken, And shadows flee away, And each true-hearted servant Shall shine as doth the day; For God, our King and Portion, In fullness of His grace, We then shall see forever, And worship face to face. Amen. Tune Title: [Brief life is here our portion]

Now the laborer's task is o'er

Author: John Ellerton Hymnal: The Hymnal #411a (1916) Meter: 7.7.7.7.8.8 Topics: Burial of the Dead Lyrics: Now the laborer's task is o'er; Now the battle day is past; Now upon the farther shore Lands the voyager at last. Father, in thy gracious keeping Leave we now thy servant sleeping. There the tears of earth are dried; There its hidden things are clear; There the work of life is tried By a juster Judge than here. Father, in thy gracious keeping Leave we now thy servant sleeping. There the penitents, that turn To the cross their dying eyes, All the love of Jesus learn At his feet in Paradise. Father, in thy gracious keeping Leave we now thy servant sleeping. There no more the powers of hell Can prevail to mar their peace; Christ the Lord shall guard them well, He who died for their release. Father, in thy gracious keeping Leave we now thy servant sleeping. 375 "Earth to earth, and dust to dust," Calmly now the words we say, Left behind, we wait in trust For the resurrection day. Father, in thy gracious keeping Leave we now thy servant sleeping. Amen. Languages: English Tune Title: REQUIESCAT

Asleep in Jesus! blessed sleep!

Author: Margaret Mackay Hymnal: The Hymnal #413a (1916) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Burial of the Dead Lyrics: Asleep in Jesus! blessed sleep! From which none ever wakes to weep; A calm and undisturbed repose, Unbroken by the last of foes. 376 Asleep in Jesus! O how sweet To be for such a slumber meet; With holy confidence to sing That death hath lost its painful sting! Asleep in Jesus! peaceful rest! Whose waking is supremely blest; No fear, no woe shall dim that hour That manifests the Savior's power. Asleep in Jesus! O for me May such a blissful refuge be! Securely shall my ashes lie, Waiting the summons from on high. Asleep in Jesus! far from thee Thy kindred and their graves may be; But there is still a blessed sleep, From which none ever wakes to weep. Languages: English Tune Title: REST (BRADBURY)

Tender Shepherd, Thou hast stilled

Author: Johann W. Meinhold; Catherine Winkworth Hymnal: The Hymnal #414 (1916) Meter: 7.8.7.8.7.7 Topics: Burial of the Dead For Children Lyrics: Tender Shepherd, thou hast stilled Now thy little lamb's brief weeping: Ah, how peaceful, pale, and mild In its narrow bed 'tis sleeping! And no sign of anguish sore Heaves that little bosom more. In this world of care and pain, Lord, thou wouldst no longer leave it; To the sunny heavenly plain Thou dost now with joy receive it; Clothed in robes of spotless white, Now it dwells with thee in light. Ah, Lord Jesus, grant that we Where it lives may soon be living, And the lovely pastures see That its heavenly food are giving; Then the gain of death we prove, Though thou take what most we love. Amen. Languages: English Tune Title: MEINHOLD
