1899 - 1979 Topics: Return of Christ; Return of Christ Versifier of "Sing, Sing a New Song to the LORD God" in Psalter Hymnal (Gray) Dewey D. Westra (b. Holland, MI, 1899; d. Wyoming, MI, 1979) was a dedicated educator, writer, and musician who faithfully served the Christian Reformed Church. He attended Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Wayne State University in Detroit. In the 1920s and 30s he was a Christian school Principal in Byron Center and Detroit, Michigan. During the 1940s he was involved in various ventures, including becoming a diesel instructor for the Ford Motor Company. After 1947 he became a principal again, serving at Christian schools in Sioux Center, Iowa; Randolph, Wisconsin; and Walker, Michigan. Westra wrote poetry in English, Dutch, and Frisian, and translated poetry into English from Dutch and Frisian. He arranged many songs and composed songs for children's choirs. He also versified all one hundred and fifty psalms and the Lord's Prayer, as well as the songs of Mary, Zechariah, and Simeon, in meters that fit the corresponding Genevan psalm tunes. His manuscripts are housed in the library of Calvin College. Seventeen of his psalm versifications and his paraphrases of the Lucan canticles were included in the 1934 and in the 1959 editions of the Psalter Hymnal. Much of the credit for keeping the Genevan psalms alive in the Christian Reformed Church goes to Westra. Bert Polman

Somerset Corry Lowry

Lowry Topics: Jesus Christ Return of Author of "Born of God, Eternal Savior" in The New Century Hymnal Lowry, Somerset Corry, M.A., son of James Corry Lowry, Q.C., of Rockdale, Dungannon, Ireland, b. in 1855, and educated at Repton and Trin. Hall, Camb., B.A. 1877, M.A. 1880. Ordained in 1879 to the Curacy of Doncaster. Subsequently Vicar of North Holmwood, Surrey, 1891-1900, and of St. Augustin's, Bournemouth, from 1900. He has published The Work of the Holy Spirit, 1894; Convalescence, 1897; Lessons from the Passion, 1899, &c. His hymns include:— 1. Behold, Lord! how the nations rage, [In Time of War.] Written "For Use during the War between Russia and Japan," in 1904, and printed as a leaflet by Jarvis & Co., Bournemouth. 2. Lord, while afar our brothers fight. [In Time of War.] Written at Holmwood, Surrey, in 1899, after the reverse of Colenso, and extensively used during the S. African War. Given in the 1904 ed. of Hymns Ancient & Modern. 3. 0 Saviour, once again the ebbing year. [For a Memorial Service.] Written at Holmwood, in 1898, for Queen Victoria's annual Service in memory of the Prince Consort. Included in Hymns of the Christ. Centuries, 1903. 4. 0 Son of God, enthroned above. [Advent] Written at Holmwood, in 1892, and given in M. Woodward's Children's Service Book, 1897. 5. Pressing forward. [Processional.] Also in Woodward's Children's Service Book, 1897. Written at Bournemouth, in 1888. 6. Son of God, Eternal Saviour. [For Unity.] Written at Holmwood, in 1893 ; printed in Goodwill, Feb. 1894, and included in the 1904 ed. of Hymns Ancient & Modern. 7. We meet as we have never met before. Harriet B. McKeever

1807 - 1887 Person Name: Harriet B. M'Keever Topics: The Home Eternal Return of Christ Author of "How Shall We Stand in the Judgment?" in Christ in Song McKeever, Harriet Burn, b. at Philadelphia, Pa., Aug. 28, 1807, and d. at Chester, in the same State, Feb. 7, 1887. She was engaged in educational work in Philadelphia for many years, and was associated with St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in that city. Her hymns, written in some instances for use in St. Andrew's, were collected and published as Twilight Musings, in 1857. L. D. Santee

1845 - 1919 Topics: The Home Eternal Return of Christ Author of "When the King Shall Claim His Own" in Christ in Song Lorenzo Dow Santee, 1845-1919. Lorenzo Santee, a pioneer Seventh-day Adventist minister, served as a pastor in the state of Kansas and in Chicago and Moline, Kansas. He was also a writer and poet whose poem "When the King Shall Claim His Own" became the words for "In the Glad time of Harvest," Hymn #539 in the 1941 Seventh-day Adventist Church Hymnal. Lorenzo was born in Hornell, New York, on September 19, 1845, and raised in Steuben County, New York, near Hornell, the oldest of twelve children of James Moore and Celina Coal Santee. He and his parents accepted the doctrine of the second coming of Christ and the SDA interpretation of Revelation 14 when he was very young. He moved to Illinois in his late teens, attended Tremont College and then taught for a short while in public schools before marrying Alice Merritt on March 4, 1869, at age 23. They would have six children, one son and five daughters. Santee was ordained in 1876 by James White and then traveled to Kansas, where he started his ministry. Known as a gentle, thoughtful man without pretense, he particularly enjoyed writing articles and poetry, many of which were published in the Review and Herald in the 1880s, 1890s, and early 1900s. "In the Glad Time of Harvest," with music by Edwin Barnes, music teacher at Battle Creek College, was first published in the 1888 Hymns and Tunes, as hymn #1332, along with the words for two other hymns by Santee (#188 and "302). The Santees were residing in Pasadena, California, when Alice died on August 10, 1917, at age 67. Ada Roeper-Boulogne

b. 1931 Topics: Return of Christ; Return of Christ Versifier of "How Lovely Is Your House, O LORD" in Psalter Hymnal (Gray) Ada Roeper-Boulogne (b. Haarlem, the Netherlands, 1931) received her elementary education at the Dutch-Chinese Christian School in Central Java, Indonesia (then the Dutch East Indies), where her father, an organist and rebuilder of organs, served as a missionary and teacher. After Japan conquered Indonesia during World War II (1942), Roeper-Boulogne's family was placed in a concentration camp and remained there until 1945. Because a teacher organized a children's choir in the camp, even there Roeper-Boulogne was not totally devoid of music. In 1946 the family returned to the Netherlands and in 1951 immigrated to St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. Roeper-Boulogne has translated several Dutch songs and is the author of "Little Children Be Happy," which was published in Bible Steps (1983). Bert Polman
