S. V. R. Ford

1835 - 1910 Composer of "[Watchman, tell us of the night]" in Melodies for Little People Born: 1835, Greenville, New York. Died: June 5, 1910, New York City. Son of Cyrus Earle and Amanda Hedden Ford, Stephen wrote several battle hymns during the American civil war which were sung by Union soldiers. He was a partner in a shirt and collar making company, Ide & Ford, in Troy, New York (1865-72). In his later years, he was known as an author, editor, composer and critic. He was living in Schenectady, New York, in 1908. Baker, born at Wenham, Mass., July 10, 1811; held many conventions; was six years Vice-President of the Handel and Haydn Society, Boston; a teacher in the public schools; principal of the Boston Music School; a composer of much music, and editor of a large number of church music, school instruction, glee, and other music books. ? - 1889 Author of "Watchman, tell us of the night" in The New Baptist Psalmist and Tune Book Dickinson, William, published in 1846:— Hymns for Passion Week and the Forty Days, Adapted for Churches or for Private Worship, Lond., J. Nisbet & Co., 1846. These hymns deal with such events in the history of Our Lord, as "The Alabaster Box"; "The Barren Fig Tree"; "The Cleansing of the Temple"; "The washing of the Disciples' feet," &c.; and with the Parables of "The Wedding garment"; "The Talents," &c, which are not commonly versified, and are worthy of attention. The following have come into common use:— 1. Calm'd each soul, and clos'd each door. Easterday at Even. This is in the Rugby School Hymn Book, 1876; and as "Calm they sit with closed door," in Kennedy, 1863; and Holy Song, 1869. 2. Ere that solemn hour of doom. The Ten Virgins— Advent.
