Prepare to meet God

Author: William B. Collyer Appears in 296 hymnals Scripture: Daniel 12:2 First Line: Great God, what do I see and hear! Lyrics: 1 Great God, what do I see and hear! The end of things created! The Judge of man I see appear, On clouds of glory seated: The trumpet sounds; the graves restore The dead which they contained before; Prepare, my soul, to meet him. 2 The dead in Christ shall first arise, At the last trumpet's sounding-- Caught up to meet him in the skies, With joy their Lord surrounding; No gloomy fears their souls dismay, His presence sheds eternal day On those prepared to meet him. 3 But sinners, filled with guilty fears, Behold his wrath prevailing; For they shall rise, and find their tears And sighs are unavailing: The day of grace is past and gone; Trembling they stand before the throne, All unprepared to meet him. 4 Great God! what do I see and hear! The end of things created! The Judge of man I see appear, On clouds of glory seated: Beneath his cross I view the day When heaven and earth shall pass away, And thus prepared to meet him. Author: Francis Scott Key, 1779-1843 Meter: 6.6.6.6.8.8 Appears in 73 hymnals Scripture: Daniel 12:2-3 Lyrics: 1 Before you, Lord, we bow, our God who reigns above and rules the world below in boundless pow'r and love. Our thanks we bring in joy and praise our hearts we raise to you, our King! 2 The nation you have blessed may well your love declare, from foes and fears at rest, protected by your care. For this bright day, for this fair land— gifts of your hand— our thanks we pay. 3 May ev'ry mountain height, each vale and forest green, shine in your Word's pure light and its rich fruits be seen! May ev'ry tongue be tuned to praise and join to raise a grateful song. 4 Earth, hear your maker's voice; your great Redeemer own; believe, obey, rejoice, and worship him alone. Cast down your pride, your sin deplore, and bow before the Crucified. 5 And when in pow'r he comes, oh, may our native land from all its rending tombs send forth a glorious band, a countless throng, with joy to sing to heav'n's high King, salvation's song! Jesus Christ, My Sure Defense

Author: Otto von Schwerin, 1616-1679; Catherine Winkworth, 1827-1878 Meter: 7.8.7.8.7.7 Appears in 56 hymnals Scripture: Daniel 12:2-3 Lyrics: 1 Jesus Christ, my sure defense and my Savior, now is living! Knowing this, my confidence rests upon the hope he's giving, though the night of death be fraught still with many an anxious thought. 2 Jesus, my Redeemer, lives; I, too, unto life shall waken. Endless joy my Savior gives; shall my courage then be shaken? Shall I fear, or could the head rise and leave his members dead? 3 No, too closely am I bound unto him by hope forever; faith's strong hand the rock has found, grasped it, and will leave it never. Even death now cannot part from its Lord the trusting heart. 4 I am flesh and must return unto dust, whence I am taken; but by faith I now discern that from death I shall awaken with my Savior to abide in his glory, at his side. 5 Glorified, I shall anew with this flesh then be enshrouded; in this body I shall view God, my Lord, with eyes unclouded; in this flesh I then shall see Jesus Christ eternally. God, we praise you, God, we bless you!

Author: Christopher M. Idle, b. 1938 Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 30 hymnals Scripture: Daniel 12:2 Lyrics: 1 God, we praise you, God, we bless you! God, we name you sovereign Lord! Mighty King whom angels worship, Father, by your Church adored: all creation shows your glory, heaven and earth draw near your throne, singing 'Holy, holy, holy, Lord of hosts, and God alone!' 2 True apostles, faithful prophets, saints who set their world ablaze, martyrs, once unknown, unheeded, join one growing song of praise, while your church on earth confesses one majestic Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, God, our hope eternally. 3 Jesus Christ, the King of glory, everlasting Son of God, humble was your virgin mother, hard the lonely path you trod. By your cross is sin defeated, hell confronted face to face, heaven opened to believers, sinners justified by grace. 4 Christ, at God's right hand victorious, you will judge the world you made; Lord, in mercy help your servants for whose freedom you have paid. Raise us up from dust to glory, guard us from all sin today; King enthroned above all praises, save your people, God, we pray!
