When Jesus Was Baptized by John

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: FTLS2017 #88 (2017) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Lyrics: 1 When Jesus was baptized by John, the sky was torn apart. The Spirit, like a dove, came down and fell upon his heart. As he rose from that desert spring, a voice from heaven cried: “You are my Son, beloved one, my chosen one, my pride.” 2 Thus Jesus heard his call from God and, gifted with God’s grace, began to spread the light of love in every darkened place. He healed the sick, the blind, and lame; the broken, contrite heart. He called for justice for the poor and all those set apart. 3 Like Jesus, we have been baptized, accepted as God’s own, and in that holy sacrament our mission was made known. The Risen Christ lives on in us, his body here on earth, and we are instruments of grace to give God’s love new birth. 4 Each time we gather at the font, remember who we are: a people charged to love and serve our neighbors near and far; a people called to be a friend to all who are in need, and show that love is just and fair in every word and deed. Topics: Baptism Baptism of Jesus; Baptism Rembering our Baptism Scripture: Isaiah 42:1 Languages: English Tune Title: JORDAN SPRING

Like Fishermen Who Left Their Boats

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: FTLS2017 #54 (2017) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Lyrics: 1 Like fishermen who left their boats and nets beside the sea, may we too answer Jesus’ call when we hear “Follow me.” 2 Like that brave soldier who believed his slave would be made well, may our belief in Jesus’ power all fear and doubt dispell. 3 Like people on that seaside hill who came to hear him preach, may we still learn from Jesus now all that he has to teach. 4 Like one small boy who shared his food, may we give Jesus leave to work such miracles through us, that we may all believe. 5 Like all who heard that Jesus lives, may we, with every breath, sing Alleluias to our God, whose love has conquered death. For Your Wise, Creating Spirit

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: FTLS2017 #30 (2017) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D First Line: For your wise, creating Spirit, Lyrics: 1 For your wise, creating Spirit, blessing us in countless ways, and your Living Word of mercy, God, we offer you our praise. From the waters of creation, you brought forth a fertile land, peopled it with men and women meant to live by your command. 2 When in Noah’s time, we faltered, you, with mercy and with love, flooded us with tears of sorrow, sent a rainbow and a dove. And when we were slaves in Egypt, each one longing to be free, you led Moses on a pathway through the waters of the sea. 3 When we wandered in the desert, you showed us a flowing spring, quenched our thirst and fed us manna, though we doubted everything. When, at last, we saw the Jordan. and beyond, the Promised Land, Joshua helped us cross the river, guided by your faithful hand. 4 When our people walked in darkness, you sent Light into our gloom: Jesus, nurtured in the waters of his mother Mary’s womb. He was baptized in the Jordan, he turned water into wine, washed the feet of his disciples, all his deeds a holy sign. 5 At the font now, God, we gather as the friends of Jesus do, to baptize your child beloved, into life begun anew. By your Spirit bless this water, bless this child that we now name, bless the people who are present. May we all your love proclaim. God, Who Called Us Through the Prophets

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: FTLS2017 #34 (2017) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Lyrics: 1 God, who called us through the prophets to be merciful and fair, and in Jesus, walked among us, teaching us to love and care, send your Spirit now, renew us, that together we may be one in faith and one in mission, one in our diversity. 2 When we ponder sacred scriptures, when we come to you in prayer, let us see with new-found vision what we’re called to do and dare. As more truth and light are springing daily from your Holy Word, and your thoughts invade our thinking, help us act on what we’ve heard. 3 Fill us with your grace and wisdom, give us courage that we may, like the saints gone on before us, meet life’s challenges today. Help us trust in one another, even when we disagree, show respect in hard decisions, work for peace and harmony. 4 Make our church a sanctuary for each one who needs a friend: poor and immigrant and outcast, who on kindness now depend. As we gather at your table, may they always find a place and, in sharing bread and chalice, know, with us, your healing grace. 5 God of mercy, God of justice, we give thanks that we belong to a people, loved and loving, rich and needy, weak and strong. You have blessed our past and present, bless the future we await. Keep us faithful to our mission, as your love we celebrate. God, Your Voice Calls Forth Compassion

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: FTLS2017 #36 (2017) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Lyrics: 1 God, your voice called forth creation, drawing mountains from the seas, sculpting valleys, painting deserts, filling fields with fruit and trees. You infused the earth with music, with a symphony of sound: whistling winds and clapping thunder, raindrops falling on the ground. 2 In the rhythm of the seasons, night and day, year after year, you brought order out of chaos, that new life-forms might appear. With an artist’s eye for beauty and a crafter’s steady hand, you began to fashion creatures in the sea and air, on land. 3 Then you made us, man and woman, in your image, each unique, to envision and imagine, to compose and write and speak, to reflect on all creation and the wonders that we share, to relate to all your creatures that surround us everywhere. 4 In the art that we envision, and the songs that we compose, in each story we imagine, in ideas we propose, may our work reflect your image and our lives your holy ways, that to you, our God, Creator, we may offer grateful praise. Though Despair, Like Deepest Darkness

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: FTLS2017 #74 (2017) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Lyrics: 1 Though despair, like deepest darkness has descended on our land, and discouraged hope of living out our faith by your command, you remind us, God, that sometimes love seems hidden, but shines on, offering new life to all people like the brightness of the dawn. 2 God of love, our dawn in darkness, shine with hope on our despair; give us strength to stand for justice, heart to speak for what is fair. Give us grace to treat our neighbors with both kindness and respect, to befriend outsiders, strangers other people may reject. 3 In our nation so divided, in our world that cries for peace, let your love shine through the darkness, that all fears and doubts may cease. Grant us patience, understanding, and a will to share the light of your love with one another, as we seek to do what’s right.
