Christians, awake, salute the happy morn

Hymnal: HPEC1871 #21 (1871) Lyrics: 1 Christians, awake, salute the happy morn Whereon the Saviour of mankind was born; Rise to adore the mystery of love Which hosts of angels chanted from above; With them the joyful tidings first begun Of God incarnate and the Virgin's Son. 2 Then to the watchful shepherds it was told, Who heard the angelic herald's voice: "Behold, I bring good tidings of a Saviour's birth To you and all the nations upon earth: This day hath God fulfill'd His promised word, This day is born a Saviour, Christ the Lord." 3 He spake; and straightway the celestial choir In hymns of joy, unknown before, conspire: The praises of redeeming love they sang, And heaven's whole arch with alleluias rang: God's highest glory was their anthem still, Peace upon earth, and unto men good-will. 4 To Bethlehem straight the happy shepherds ran, To see the Wonder God had wrought for man: And found, with Joseph and the blessèd maid, Her Son, the Saviour, in a manger laid; Amazed, the wondrous story they proclaim, The earliest heralds of the Saviour's name. 5 Let us, like these good shepherds, then employ Our grateful voices to proclaim the joy; Trace we the Babe, who hath retrieved our loss, From His poor Manger to His bitter Cross; Treading His steps, assisted by His grace, Till man's first heavenly state again takes place. 6 Then may we hope, the angelic thrones among, To sing, redeemed, a glad triumphal song; He, that was born upon this joyful day, Around us all His glory shall display; Saved by His love, incessant we shall sing Of angels and of angel-men the King. It came upon the midnight clear

Hymnal: HPEC1871 #22 (1871) Lyrics: 1 It came upon the midnight clear, That glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth To touch their harps of gold; Peace on the earth, good-will to men, From heaven's all-gracious King; The world in solemn stillness lay To hear the angels sing. 2 Still through the cloven skies they come, With peaceful wings unfurl'd; And still their heavenly music floats O'er all the weary world: Above its sad and lonely plains They bend on hovering wing, And ever o'er its Babel sounds The blessed angels sing. 3 O ye, beneath life's crushing load, Whose forms are bending low, Who toil along the climbing way With painful steps and slow! Look now, for glad and golden hours Come swiftly on the wing: O rest beside the weary road, And hear the angels sing. 4 For lo, the days are hastening on, By prophets seen of old, When with the ever-circling years, Shall come the time foretold. When the new heaven and earth shall own The Prince of Peace their King, And the whole world send back the song Which now the angels sing. Languages: English

Angels from the realms of glory

Hymnal: HPEC1871 #24 (1871) Lyrics: 1 Angels, from the realms of glory, Wing your flight o'er all the earth; Ye who sang creation's story, Now proclaim Messiah's birth: Come and worship, Worship Christ, the new-born King. 2 Shepherds, in the field abiding, Watching o'er your flocks by night; God with man is now residing, Yonder shines the infant-light: Come and worship, Worship Christ, the new-born King. 3 Sages, leave your contemplations; Brighter visions beam afar: Seek the great Desire of Nations, Ye have seen His natal star: Come and worship, Worship Christ, the new-born King. 4 Saints before the altar bending, Watching long in hope and fear, Suddenly the Lord, descending, In His temple shall appear; Come and worship, Worship Christ, the new-born King. Calm on the listening ear of night

Hymnal: HPEC1871 #26 (1871) Lyrics: 1 Calm on the listening ear of night Come heaven's melodious strains, Where wild Judea stretches far Her silver-mantled plains. Celestial choirs from courts above Shed sacred glories there; And angels, with their sparkling lyres, Make music on the air. 2 The answering hills of Palestine Send back the glad reply; And greet, from all their holy heights, The Dayspring from on high. O'er the blue depths of Galilee There comes a holier calm, And Sharon waves, in solemn praise, Her silent groves of palm. 3 "Glory to God!" the sounding skies Loud with their anthems ring, "Peace to the earth, good-will to men, From heaven's eternal King!" Light on thy hills, Jerusalem! The Saviour now is born! And bright on Bethlehem's joyous plains Breaks the first Christmas morn. Languages: English

A few more years shall roll

Hymnal: HPEC1871 #28 (1871) Lyrics: 1 A few more years shall roll, A few more seasons come, And we shall be with those that rest Asleep within the tomb: Then, O my Lord, prepare My soul for that great day; O wash me in Thy precious Blood, And take my sins away. 2 A few more suns shall set O'er these dark hills of time, And we shall be where suns are not, A far serener clime: Then, O my Lord, prepare My soul for that blest day; O wash me in Thy precious Blood, And take my sins away. 3 A few more storms shall beat On this wild rocky shore, And we shall be where tempests cease, And surges swell no more: Then, O my Lord, prepare My soul for that calm day; O wash me in Thy precious Blood, And take my sins away. 4 A few more struggles here, A few more partings o'er, A few more toils, a few more tears, And we shall weep no more: Then, O my Lord, prepare My soul for that bright day; O wash me in Thy precious Blood, And take my sins away. 5 'Tis but a little while And He shall come again, Who died that we might live, Who lives That we with Him may reign: Then, O my Lord, prepare My soul for that glad day; O wash me in Thy precious blood, And take my sins away. O God, our help in ages past

Hymnal: HPEC1871 #29 (1871) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Lyrics: 1 O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home: 2 Under the shadow of Thy throne Thy saints have dwelt secure; Sufficient is Thine arm alone, And our defence is sure. 3 Before the hills in order stood, Or earth received her frame, From everlasting Thou art God, To endless years the same. 4 A thousand ages in Thy sight Are like an evening gone; Short as the watch that ends the night Before the rising sun. 5 Time, like an ever-rolling stream, Bears all its sons away; They fly forgotten, as a dream Dies at the opening day. 6 O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Be Thou our guard while life shall last, And our eternal home. The God of life, Whose constant care

Hymnal: HPEC1871 #30 (1871) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Lyrics: 1 The God of life, Whose constant care with blessings crowns each opening year, My scanty span doth still prolong, And wakes anew mine annnual song. 2 Thy children, panting to be gone, May bid the tide of time roll on, To land them on that happy shore Where years and death are known no more. 3 No more fatigue, no more distress, Nor sin, nor hell, shall reach that place; No groans, to mingle with the songs Resounding from immortal tongues: 4 No more alarms from ghostly foes; No cares to break the long repose; No midnight shade, no clouded sun, But sacred, high, eternal noon. 5 O long-expected year! begin; Dawn on this world of woe and sin; Fain would we leave this weary road, And sleep in death, to rest with God.
