I Cannot Tell

Author: William Y. Fullerton Hymnal: Renew! Songs and Hymns for Blended Worship #160 (1995) Meter: 11.10.11.10 D First Line: I cannot tell why he whom angels worship Lyrics: 1 I cannot tell why he whom angels worship should come in flesh as prophets long foretold, or why the Shepherd longs to save the wanderers and bring them back rejoicing to the fold. But this I know, that he was born of Mary when Bethlehem's manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and labored, and so the promised Savior of the world is come. 2 I cannot tell how silently he suffered as with his peace he graced this place of tears, or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted, and stays our sin and calms our lurking fear, and lifts the burden from the heavy-laden, for still the suffering Savior of the world is here. 3 I cannot tell how he will win the nations, how he will claim his earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirations of east and west, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory, and he shall reap the harvest he has sown, and some glad day his sun shall shine in splendor, when he, the risen Savior of the world, is known. 4 I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship when at his bidding, every storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when all our hearts with love for him are filled. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, and countless voices then will join to sing, and earth to heaven, and heaven to earth will answer: "At last the living Savior of the world is King!" Above the Hills of Time

Author: Thomas Tiplady Hymnal: The A.M.E. Zion Hymnal #173 (1999) Meter: 11.10.11.10 D First Line: Above the hills of time the cross is gleaming Lyrics: 1 Above the hills of time the cross is gleaming, Fair as the sun when night has turned to day; And from it love’s pure light is richly streaming, To cleanse the heart and banish sin away. To this dear cross the eyes of men are turning Today as in the ages lost to sight; And so for Thee, O Christ, men’s hearts are yearning, As shipwrecked seamen yearn for morning light. 2 The cross, O Christ, Thy wondrous love revealing, Awakes our hearts as with the light of morn, And pardon o’er our sinful spirits stealing Tells us that we, in Thee, have been reborn. Like echoes to sweet temple bells replying Our hearts, O Lord, make answer to Thy love; And we will love Thee with a love undying, Till we are gathered to Thy home above. AMEN. Brightest and Best

Author: Reginald Hebee Hymnal: Chalice Hymnal #174 (1995) Meter: 11.10.11.10 D First Line: Brightest and best of the stars of the morning Lyrics: 1 Brightest and best of the stars of the morning, dawn on our pathway, and lend us your aid. Star of the east, the horizon adorning, guide where our infant Redeemer is laid. 2 Shall we give Jesus our costly devotion, fragrance of Edom, and off'rings divine, gems of the mountain, and pearls of the ocean, myrrh from the forest, or gold from the mine? 3 Vainly we offer each ample oblation, vainly with gifts Jesus' favor secure. Richer by far is the heart’s adoration. Dearer to God are the gifts of the poor. 4 Brightest and best of the stars of the morning, dawn on our pathway, and lend us your aid. Star of the east, the horizon adorning, guide where our infant Redeemer is laid. We Are the Household That Gathers Round Jesus (The Household of God)

Author: Shirley Erena Murray Hymnal: New Hymns of Hope #214 Meter: 11.10.11.10 D First Line: We are the household that gathers round Jesus Lyrics: 1 We are the household that gathers round Jesus, sharing one table, one cup and one Light, we are a family human and hurting, changing and challenged to know what is right; we are this family deeply divided, struggling to service the Gospel's demands, we are a household of quarrelsome children each with a free-flying kite in our hands. 2 Yet we are part of God's dream for creation, we who are learning forgiveness and grace, lanterns of peace lighting pathways to justice, giving the stranger a welcoming place; let's be a household of care and compassion, open to cultures and creeds not our own, building a model all *people will witness, seeing where winds of the Spirit have blown! 3 While there are children whose *food bowls are empty, while there are prisons where innocents die, while refugees swell the flood of the homeless, while the earth shudders, and all creatures cry, we are a people who hear and must answer, healing and helping a new world to birth, household of faith that is fed at one table, sharing good news with the whole of the earth. Good is the Lord, and Full of Kind Compassion

Hymnal: Psalter Hymnal (Red) #216 (1934) Meter: 11.10.11.10 D First Line: Good is the Lord and full of kind compassion Lyrics: 1 Good is the Lord and full of kind compassion, Most slow to anger, plenteous in love; Rich is His grace to all that humbly seek Him, Boundless and endless as the heavens above. His love is like a father's to his children, Tender and kind to all who fear His Name; For well He knows our weakness and our frailty, He knows that we are dust, He knows our frame. 2 We fade and die like flowers that grow in beauty, Like tender grass that soon will disappear; But evermore the love of God is changeless, Still shown to those who look to Him in fear. High in the heavens His throne is fixed forever, His kingdom rules o'er all from pole to pole; Bless ye the Lord through all His wide dominion, Bless His most holy Name, O thou my soul.
