O little town of Bethlehem

Author: Phillips Brooks, 1835-1893 Hymnal: Common Praise #63a (2000) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Scripture: Isaiah 57:15 Lyrics: 1 O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by: yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. 2 O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth, and praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth. For Christ is born of Mary; and, gathered all above, while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love. 3 How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given! so God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming; but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in. 4 O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; cast out our sin, and enter in: be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels, the great glad tidings tell: O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel. Topics: Christmas; Chirstimas Midnight Languages: English Tune Title: FOREST GREEN

There is an hour of peaceful rest

Author: Tappan Hymnal: The Voice of Praise #934 (1873) Meter: Irregular Scripture: Isaiah 57:2 Lyrics: 1 There is an hour of peaceful rest To mourning wanderers given; There is a joy for souls distressed, A balm for every wounded breast,-- 'Tis found alone in heaven. 2 There is a home for weary souls, By sin and sorrow driven, When tossed on life's tempestuous shoals, Where storms arise and ocean rolls, And all is drear but heaven. 3 There faith lifts up her cheerful eye, To brighter prospects given, And views the tempest passing by, The evening shadows quickly fly, And all serene in heaven. 4 There fragrant flowers immortal bloom, And joys supreme are given; There rays divine disperse the gloom; Beyond the confines of the tomb Appears the dawn of heaven.
