O little town of Bethlehem

Author: Phillips Brooks (1835-1893) Hymnal: Hymns of Glory, Songs of Praise #304 (2008) Scripture: Isaiah 9:2 Lyrics: 1 O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see you lie! Above your deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by; yet, in your dark streets shining the everlasting Light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in you tonight. 2 O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth and praises sing to God the King, and peace to all on earth. For Christ is born of Mary; and, gathered all above, while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love. 3 How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming; but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in. 4 O holy child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; cast out our sin, and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell: O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel. Languages: English Tune Title: FOREST GREEN

Crown him with many crowns

Author: Matthew Bridges, 1800-94; Godfrey Thring, 1823-1903 Hymnal: Together in Song #228 (1999) Meter: 6.6.8.6 D Scripture: Isaiah 9:2-7 Lyrics: 1 Crown him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne; hark! how the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own: awake, my soul, and sing of him who died for me, and hail him as your chosen king through all eternity. 2 Crown him the Son of God before the worlds began: and we who tread where he has trod crown him the Son of Man, who every grief has known that wrings the human breast, and takes and bears them for his own, that all in him may rest. 3 Crown him the Lord of love; behold his hands and side, those wounds yet visible above in beauty glorified; no angel there on high can fully bear that sight, but downwards bends a burning eye at mysteries so bright. 4 Crown him the Lord of life, who triumphed o'er the grave, and rose victorious in the strife for those he came to save: his glories now we sing who died, and rose on high; who died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die. 5 Crown him the Lord of peace, whose power a sceptre sways from pole to pole, that wars may cease absorbed in prayer and praise: his reign shall know no end, and round his pierced feet fair flowers of paradise extend their fragrance ever sweet. 6 Crown him the Lord of years, the Potentate of time, Creator of the rolling spheres, majestic and sublime: all hail, Redeemer, hail! for you have died for me; your praise shall never, never fail throughout eternity. Come, Ye Thankful People, Come

Author: Henry Alford, 1810-71 Hymnal: Lutheran Service Book #892 (2006) Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Scripture: Isaiah 9:3 Lyrics: 1 Come, ye thankful people, come; Raise the song of harvest home. All be safely gathered in Ere the winter storms begin; God, our Maker, doth provide For our wants to be supplied. Come to God's own temple, come; Raise the song of harvest home. 2 All the world is God's own field, Fruit unto His praise to yield; Wheat and tares together sown, Unto joy or sorrow grown. First the blade and then the ear, Then the full corn shall appear. Lord of harvest, grant that we Wholesome grain and pure may be. 3 For the Lord, our God, shall come And shall take His harvest home, From His field shall in that day All offences purge away, Give His angels charge at last In the fire the tares to cast, But the fruitful ears to store In His garner evermore. 4 Even so, Lord, quickly come To Thy final harvest home; Gather Thou Thy people in, Free from sorrow, free from sin, There, forever purified, In Thy garner to abide: Come with all Thine angels, come, Raise the glorious harvest home.
