Lord, as to Thy dear cross we flee

Author: Rev. John Hampden Gurney (1802-1862) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 243 hymnals Topics: God Grace, His Restoring Lyrics: 1 Lord, as to Thy dear cross we flee, And plead to be forgiven, So let Thy life our pattern be, And form our souls for heaven. 2 Help us through good report and ill Our daily cross to bear, Like Thee, to do our Father's will, Our brethren's griefs to share. 3 Let grace our selfishness expel, Our earthliness refine, And kindness in our bosoms dwell, As free and true as Thine. 4 If joy shall at Thy bidding fly, And grief's dark day come on, We, in our turn, would meekly cry, "Father, Thy will be done." 5 Kept peaceful in the midst of strife, Forgiving and forgiven, O may we lead the pilgrim's life, And follow Thee to heaven. Amen. Used With Tune: ST. COLUMBA (IRISH)

There's a wideness in God's mercy

Author: Dr. F. W. Faber, 1814-1863 Appears in 902 hymnals Topics: Grace Restoring Lyrics: 1. There's a wideness in God's mercy, Like the wideness of the sea; There's a kindness in His justice, Which is more than liberty. 2. There is no place where earth's sorrows Are more felt than up in heaven; There is no place where earth's failings Have such kindly judgment given. 3. There is welcome for the sinner, And more graces for the good; There is mercy with the Saviour; There is healing in His blood. 4. For the love of God is broader Than the measure of man's mind; And the heart of the Eternal Is most wonderfully kind. 5. There is plentiful redemption In the blood that has been shed, There is joy for all the members In the sorrows of the Head. 6. If our love were but more simple, We should take Him at His word, And our lives would be all sunshine In the favour of our Lord. In many editions the hymn begins with the following stanzas: Was there ever kindest shepherd Half so gentle, half so sweet, As the Saviour who would have us Come and gather round His feet? Souls of men, why will ye scatter Like a crowd of frightened sheep? Foolish hearts, why will ye wander From a love so true and deep? Used With Tune: NEWTON FERNS

Meter: 7.7.7.7 Appears in 10 hymnals Topics: Grace Restoring First Line: Gracious God, my heart renew Lyrics: 1 Gracious God, my heart renew, Make my spirit right and true; Cast me not away from Thee, Let Thy Spirit dwell in me; Thy salvation's joy impart, Steadfast make my willing heart. 2 Sinners then shall learn from me And return, o God to Thee; Saviour, all my guilt remove, And my tongue shall sing Thy love; Touch my silent lips, O Lord, And my mouth shall praise accord. 3 Not the formal sacrifice Hath acceptance in Thy eyes; Broken hearts are in Thy sight More than sacrificial rite; Contrite spirit, pleading cries, Thou, O God, wilt not despise. 4 Prosper Zion in thy grace And her broken walls replace; Then our righteous sacrifice Shall delight Thy holy eyes; Freewill off'rings, gladly made, On Thy altar shall be laid. Weary of wandering from my God

Meter: Irregular Appears in 147 hymnals Topics: or, a Prayer for restoring Grace Lyrics: 1 Weary of wandering from my God, And now made willing to return, I hear, and bow me to the rod: For thee, not without hope, I mourn; I have an Advocate above, A Friend before the Throne of Love. 2 O Jesus, full of truth and grace, More full of grace than I of sin; Yet once again I seek thy face, Open thine arms and take me in! And freely my backslidings heal, And love the faithless sinner still. 3 Thou know'st the way to bring me back, My fallen spirit to restore; O! for thy truth and mercy's sake! Forgive and bid me sin no more: The ruins of my soul repair, And make my heart a House of Prayer. 4 The stone to flesh again convert: The veil of sin once more remove! Sprinkle thy blood upon my heart, And melt it by thy dying love! This rebel heart by love subdue, And make it soft and make it new. 5 Give to mine eyes refreshing tears, And kindle my relentings now; Fill all my soul with filial fears: To thy sweet yoke my spirit bow: Bend by the grace, O bend or break The iron sinews in my neck! Scripture: Hosea 14:1

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 7 hymnals Topics: Grace Restoring First Line: When Zion in her low estate Lyrics: 1 When Zion in her low estate Was bro't from bondage by the Lord, In ecstasy we sang for joy, By grace and wondrous love restored. 2 The Lord in greatly blessing us Before the world His pow'r displays; Yea, great things God has done for us, And filled our hearts with joy and praise. 3 O Lord, refresh us by Thy grace, Revive and quicken all our pow'rs, As failing streams are made to flow, Replenished by abundant show'rs. 4 The sower bearing precious seed May weep as in his toil he grieves, But he shall come again with joy In harvest time with golden sheaves. Jesus, we bless thy Father's name

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 29 hymnals Topics: Restoring grace Lyrics: Jesus, we bless thy Father's name; Thy God and ours are both the same; What heav'nly blessings from his throne Flow down to sinners through his Son! "Christ be my first elect," he said, Then chose our souls in Christ our head, Before he gave the mountains birth, Or laid foundations for the earth. Thus did eternal love begin To raise us up from death and sin; Our characters were then decreed, "Blameless in love, a holy seed." Predestinated to be sons, Born by degrees, but chose at once, A new regenerated race, To praise the glory of his grace. With Christ our Lord we share our part In the affections of his heart; Nor shall our souls be thence removed, Till he forgets his first-beloved. Scripture: Ephesians 1:3
