Spirit-Child Jesus

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Meter: 10.10.10.10 Appears in 2 hymnals Topics: Bethlehem; Bethlehem First Line: Spirit-child Jesus, in joyful refrain Lyrics: 1 Spirit-child Jesus, in joyful refrain, echoing songs over Bethlehem's plain, what will we do when the carols all fade? "Take up my song: Glory! Be not afraid!" 2 Spirit-child Jesus, in animal shed, smiling at shepherds from strange borrowed bed, what will we do when the manger's away? "Take up my story, and live it each day!" 3 Spirit-child Jesus, in starry white light, twinkling on evergreens, shiny and bright, what will we do when the branches are shorn? "Take up my cross that for you I have borne!" 4 Spirit-child Jesus, in vigilant eyes, awaiting the gift bearing Love's great surprise, what will we do when the presents are done? "Take up my presence, for I am God's Son!" 5 Spirit-child Jesus, in hot tongues of flame, melting the candle alight in your name, What will we do when the candle is gone? "Take up my light! Pass it on, pass it on!" Scripture: Luke 2:6-7 Used With Tune: SPIRIT-CHILD

How Far It Was to Bethlehem

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Christmas Journey to Bethlehem Lyrics: 1 How far it was to Bethlehem for Mary, great with child, and Joseph, trusted with the one upon whom God had smiled! From Nazareth to Jericho, then up a long, steep road, they journeyed on to David’s town with their most precious load. 2 They could not find a place to stay save in a stable stall, and there amid the animals was born the Lord of all. The heavens burst with angel-song to shepherds on the hill: “The Christ is born and peace will come to people of good will.” 3 The shepherds hurried off to find this new-born baby boy. “The Promised One is here, at last! Our hearts are filled with joy!” They knelt before his manger bed, and gazed upon the face that showed in its sweet countenance Love’s gift of peace and grace. 4 How far it is to Bethlehem for us who live today, who bear the burdens of our doubts and do not trust Love’s way. God, as we journey on in life, let angel-songs ne’er cease, that, like the shepherds, we may find in Christ a hope for peace. Scripture: Luke 2:4-5 Used With Tune: JERICHO ROAD

Once in royal David's city

Author: Mrs. Cecil Frances Alexander, 1823-1895 Appears in 423 hymnals Topics: Bethlehem Christ born in Lyrics: 1 Once in royal David's city Stood a lowly cattle-shed, Where a mother laid her baby In a manger for His bed; Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little Child. 2 And through all His wondrous childhood, He would honour and obey, Love and watch the lowly mother In whose gentle arms He lay: Christian children all should be Mild, obedient, good as He. 3 For He is our childhood's pattern, Day by day like us He grew, He was little, weak and helpless, Tears and smile, like us He knew; And He feeleth for our sadness, And He shareth in our gladness. 4 Not in that poor lowly stable, With the oxen standing by, We shall see Him; but in heaven, Set at God's right hand on high; When like stars His children crowned All in white shall wait around. Used With Tune: IRBY

O Sing a Song of Bethlehem

Author: Louis F. Benson Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 66 hymnals Topics: Biblical Places Bethlehem, Nazareth, Galilee Lyrics: 1 O sing a song of Bethlehem, of shepherds watching there, and of the news that came to them from angels in the air: the light that shone on Bethlehem fills all the world today; of Jesus’ birth and peace on earth the angels sing alway. 2 O sing a song of Nazareth, of sunny days of joy, O sing of fragrant flowers’ breath, and of the sinless Boy: for now the flowers of Nazareth in every heart may grow; now spreads the fame of his dear name on all the winds that blow. 3 O sing a song of Galilee, of lake and woods and hill, of him who walked upon the sea and bade the waves be still: for though, like waves on Galilee, dark seas of trouble roll, when faith has heard the Master’s word, falls peace upon the soul. 4 O sing a song of Calvary, its glory and dismay; of him who hung upon the tree, and took our sins away: for he who died on Calvary is risen from the grave, and Christ, our Lord, by heaven adored, is mighty now to save. Scripture: Micah 5:2 Used With Tune: KINGSFOLD
