God's Holy Spirit Came

Author: Mary Jackson Cathey, b. 1926; Michael Denham, b. 1955 Meter: 6.6.8.4 D Appears in 3 hymnals Lyrics: 1 God's Holy Spirit came with rushing wind and fire, Christ's presence here to comfort, bless, and to inspire. The Spirit thus began God's holy work on earth at Pentecost, a gift that gave the Church its birth. 2 God sent the Spirit forth, fulfilling prophets' word, to those who followed Jesus and who called him Lord. And as disciples met near temple courts for prayer the Spirit blew and rested on those gathered there. 3 God's Spirit filled each one, as Jesus had foretold. In many tongues they spoke God's Word, renewed and bold. "Repent and be baptized," preached Peter in that hour, and thousands came believing by the Spirit's pow'r. 4 God's Church alive today continues to proclaim salvation by the Spirit's pow'r in Jesus' name. Let all believers now their tongues and lives employ. Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, our highest joy! Topics: Day of Pentecost Scripture: Acts 2:1-11 Used With Tune: YIGDAL

Another Son is Killed

Author: Carolyn Winfrey Gillette Meter: 6.6.8.4 D Appears in 2 hymnals Lyrics: Another son is killed, Another daughter dies, And loving, waiting homes are filled With loved ones’ cries. As rivers never sleep, So wars flow on and on. Hang up your harps, sit down and weep For those now gone! We grieve for children lost, For hearts too sad to pray; We mourn, O Lord, the growing cost Of hatred’s way. And sure as threats increase And anger turns to war, We pray that we may find a peace Worth struggling for. We know your way, O Lord, For all your people here: A plowshare from a fighting sword, A transformed spear! Now comfort those who grieve, Be in each saddened home, And by your grace may we believe— And seek Shalom. Topics: Justice; Lament; Peacemaking Scripture: Isaiah 2:4 Used With Tune: LEONI

Praise to the Living God

Author: Daniel Ben Judah, 14th cent. Meter: 6.6.8.4 D Appears in 2 hymnals First Line: Praise to the living God! Lyrics: 1 Praise to the living God! All praised be The Name, which was, and is, and is to be, for aye the same. The one eternal God ere aught that now appears: the first, the last, beyond all thought or timeless years. 2 Unformed all lovely forms declare God's loveliness; no holiness on earth can e'er The Name express whose love enfolds us all; whose laud the earth displays. Yea, everywhere, above, below, is perfect praise. 3 The spirit floweth free, high surging where it will; in prophet's word did speak of old, and speaketh still. The Torah rests secure, and changeless it shall stand, deep writ upon the human heart, on sea, on land. 4 Eternal life hath God implanted in the soul; such love shall be our strength and stay while ages roll. Praise to the living God! All praised be The Name which was, and is, and is to be, for aye the same.
