Franklin L. Sheppard

1852 - 1930 Arranger of "TERRA BEATA" in The Church Hymnal Franklin L. Sheppard (b. Philadelphia, PA, 1852; d. Germantown, PA, 1930) arranged the tune for Babcock's text and published it in the Presbyterian church school hymnal Alleluia (1915), edited by Sheppard (Babcock and Sheppard were friends). After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Sheppard entered the family foundry business in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1875. He was organist at Zion Episcopal Church and later was an elder and music director of the Second Presbyterian Church in Baltimore. President of the Presbyterian Board of Publications, Sheppard also served on the committee that prepared the Presbyterian Hymnal of 1911. In the history of hymnody he is remembered primarily for arranging the tune TERRA BEATA for “This Is My Father's World.” Bert Polman

Emily R. Brink

b. 1940 Person Name: Emily Brink Arranger of "Great Is the LORD Our God" in Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs Emily R. Brink is a Senior Research Fellow of the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship and Adjunct Professor of Church Music and Worship at Calvin Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Her main areas of responsibility are conference planning and global resources. She is program manager of the annual Calvin Symposium on Worship, which draws more than 70 presenters and 1600 participants from around the world. She also travels widely to lecture and to learn about worship in different parts of the world, especially in Asia, where she has lectured in Bangladesh, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, and Taiwan. Her areas of interest include congregational song from all times and places; psalmody; hymnal editing. She was editor of four hymnals and consults with a wide range of churches on worship renewal issues. Dr. Brink is active in the American Guild of Organists, serving in both local and national offices, as well as in the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada (president from 1990 1992) and named a Fellow of the Hymn Society in 2004 in recognition of distinguished services to hymnody and hymnology. --internal.calvinseminary.edu/

Jones at­tend­ed the Guil­ford Or­gan School, New York Ci­ty (grad­u­at­ed 1920), and the Amer­i­can Con­ser­va­to­ry, Fon­taine­bleau, France, and re­ceived hon­or­a­ry de­grees from Washing­ton and Jeff­er­son, and Bea­ver Col­leg­es. In 1924, he be­came a Fel­low of the Amer­i­can Guild of Or­gan­ists. He played the or­gan at church­es in Ports­mouth and Day­ton, Ohio; and in New York Ci­ty, Rome, and Brook­lyn, New York. From 1934 un­til re­tir­ing in 1979, he was the Mil­ler Cha­pel or­gan­ist and choir di­rect­or at Prince­ton The­o­lo­gi­cal Sem­in­ary, New Jer­sey. Edward Shippen Barnes

1887 - 1958 Arranger of "TERRA BEATA" in Trinity Hymnal (Rev. ed.) Edward Shippen Barnes was an American organist and composer. He was born 9 September 1887 in Seabright, NJ and died 2 February 1958 in Idyllwild, CA. He studied at Yale University with Horatio Parker and Harry Jepson, then continued his studies in Paris. He worked as an organizt at Church of the Incarnation in New York, Rutgers Presbyterian Chruch in New York, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Philadelphia and the First Presbyterian Church in Santa Monica.
