Come, know my joy, the Maker says

Author: Andrew Donaldson, 1951- Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: James 1:17 First Line: "Come, know my joy," the Maker says Lyrics: 1 "Come, know my joy," the Maker says and pours out works of power that sear the sense, defy the mind and fill the soul with awe, and we with open mouth receive God's gifts with infant need, and, sight unfocussed, scarce perceive Love's presence as we feed. 2 The feast we join is long begun; God bids us welcome here to name and use the sovereign gifts within our human care. With God's own joy some seem to soar, a fierce and holy flame; some gifts are thorns we scarce endure to touch, of face, or name. 3 "Come, seek my face,"the Giver says, "with heart and soul and strength; let fear give way to love; come, step upon the waves of faith." Dear Giver, Gift, we seek your face: you share our thorn, our scar. We learn your joy when by your grace we share the gift we are. 4 "Come, learn of me," the Servant says and multiplies a feast of loaves and fish, of bread and wine, transforming every guest. "Come," says the Host, "from west and east bring gifts to share– come eat!– none lost or wasted when God's feast of joy, will be complete." Refrain: He will turn your troubles into treasures, He will turn your sorrows into joy, Don’t be down, for He is surely giving Happiness to every girl and boy. 2 Do you say your trials seem unending, And your troubles seem so very big? But with God a mountain is a molehill, And the strongest stump is but a twig. [Refrain] 3 You will go through days that bring you sorrow, Many things may try to get you down, But God uses rain to make a rainbow, And He’ll use the thorns to make a crown. [Refrain] 4 Take your troubles to the throne of Heaven, There you’ll see them through the Savior’s eyes; He can make the most of every moment; He can shrink your problems down to size. Be Doers of the Word of God

Author: Carolyn Winfrey Gillette Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: James 1:19-27 Lyrics: Be doers of the word of God, Not simply those who hear. Be ones who look into God’s word, Obey, and persevere. Be quick to listen, slow to speak, And slow to anger, too. Put wrath aside; instead, be meek And let God work in you. Religion that is undefiled, Religion that is pure Will reach to help the orphaned child And welcome all the poor. If people come here poorly dressed, To judge them is a sin. The rich aren’t better than the rest; God welcomes poor ones in. O Christ, you save us by God’s grace From having to obey. Then freed to love, we can embrace A life that seeks your way. May we be doers of the word, May faith shine through our deeds; And as we seek to trust in God, May ethics follow creeds. Topics: Grace of God; Justice; Life in Christ Used With Tune: ELLACOMBE
