How sweet the name of Jesus sounds

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #373 (1828) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Scripture: 1 Peter 2:7 Lyrics: 1 How sweet the name of Jesus sounds In a believer's ear! It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds, And drives away his fear. 2 It makes the wounded spirit whole, And calms the troubled breast; 'Tis manna to the hungry soul, And to the weary, rest. 3 By him, my pray'rs acceptance gain, Although with sin defil'd; Satan accuses me in vain, And I am own'd a child. 4 Weak is the effort of my heart, And cold my warmest thought; But when I see thee as thou art, I'll praise thee as I ought. 5 Till then, I would your love proclaim, With every fleeting breath; And may the music of thy name Refresh my soul in death. Glorious things of you are spoken

Author: John Newton, 1725-1807 Hymnal: Together in Song #446 (1999) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Scripture: 1 Peter 2:1-8 Lyrics: 1 Glorious things of you are spoken, Zion, city of our God: he whose word cannot be broken formed you for his own abode. On the Rock of Ages founded, what can shake your sure repose? With salvation's walls surrounded you may smile at all your foes. 2 See, the streams of living waters, springing from eternal love, well supply your sons and daughters and all fear of want remove: who can faint while such a river ever flows their thirst to assuage - grace, which like the Lord the giver never fails from age to age? 3 Blest inhabitants of Zion, washed in their Redeemer's blood: Jesus, whom their souls rely on, makes them kings and priests to God. For his love his people raises over self to reign as kings, and as priests, his solemn praises each for a thank-offering brings. 4 Saviour, since of Zion's city I, through grace, a member am, let the world deride or pity, I will glory in your name: fading are the worldlings' pleasures, all their boasted pomp and show; solid joys and lasting treasures none but Zion's children know. He whose word cannot be broken formed you for his own abode. On the Rock of Ages founded, what can shake your sure repose? With salvation's walls surrounded, you may smile at all your foes. 2 See, the streams of living waters, springing from eternal love, well supply your sons and daughters and all fear of want remove. Who can faint while such a river ever will their thirst assuage? Grace which, like the Lord, the giver, never fails from age to age. 3 Round each habitation hovering, see the cloud and fire appear for a glory and a covering, showing that the Lord is near. Thus deriving from their banner light by night and shade by day, safe they feed upon the manna which God gives them on their way. 4 Savior, since of Zion's city I through grace a member am, let the world deride or pity, I will glory in your name.
