O little town of Bethlehem

Author: Phillips Brooks, 1835-1893 Hymnal: Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New #508a (2000) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Scripture: Job 38:7-11 Lyrics: 1 O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. 2 O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth, and praises sing to God the King, and peace to all the earth; For Christ is born of Mary; and, gathered all above, while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wond'ring love. 3 How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is giv'n! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heav'n. No ear may hear his coming; but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in. 4 O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; cast out our sin, and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell: O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel. Topics: Christmas; Years A, B, and C Christmas Day Languages: English Tune Title: FOREST GREEN

The Spacious Firmament on High

Author: Joseph Addison (1672-1719) Hymnal: Common Praise (1998) #426 (1998) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Scripture: Job 38 Lyrics: 1 The spacious firmament on high, with all the blue ethereal sky, and spangled heavens, a shining frame, their great Original proclaim. The unwearied sun from day to day does his Creator's power display; and publishes to every land the work of an almighty hand. 2 Soon as the evening shades prevail, the moon takes up the wondrous tale, and nightly to the listening earth repeats the story of her birth: whilst all the stars that round her burn, and all the planets in their turn, confirm the tidings, as they roll and spread the truth from pole to pole. 3 What though in solemn silence all move round the dark terrestrial ball, what though no real voice nor sound, amid their radiant orbs be found; in reason's ear they all rejoice, and utter forth a glorious voice; for ever singing as they shine, "The hand that made us is divine."
