Crown Him with Many Crowns

Author: Matthew Bridges; Godfrey Thring Hymnal: Voices Together #408 (2020) Meter: 6.6.8.6 D Scripture: Psalm 45:2-7 Lyrics: 1 Crown him with many crowns, the Lamb upon the throne. Hark! how the heav’nly anthem drowns all music but its own. Awake, my soul, and sing of him who died for thee, and hail him as the matchless king, through all eternity. 2 Crown him the Lord of life, who triumphed o’er the grave and rose victorious in the strife for those he came to save. His glories now we sing who died, and rose on high, who died, eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die. 3 Crown him the Lord of love; behold his hands and side. Rich wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified. No angels in the sky can fully bear that sight, but downward bend their burning eyes at mysteries so bright. 4 Crown him the Lord of peace, whose pow’r a scepter sways from pole to pole that wars may cease, absorbed in prayer and praise. His reign shall know no end; and round his pierced feet fair flow’rs of paradise extend their fragrance ever sweet. 5 Crown him the Lord of years, the potentate of time, creator of the rolling spheres, ineffably sublime. All hail, Redeemer, hail! for thou hast died for me. Thy praise shall never, never fail throughout eternity. A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

Author: Martin Luther, 1483-1546; Frederick H. Hedge, 1805-1890 Hymnal: Worship and Rejoice #507 (2003) Meter: 8.7.8.7.6.6.6.6.7 Scripture: Psalm 45 Lyrics: 1 A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; our helper he, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; his craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal. 2 Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing, were not the right man on our side, the man of God’s own choosing. Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he; Lord Sabaoth his name, from age to age the same, and he must win the battle. 3 And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God hath willed his truth to triumph through us. The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him; his rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure; one little word shall fell him. 4 That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth; the Spirit and the gifts are ours thro' him who with us sideth. Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; the body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still; his kingdom is forever. Hail, Thou Once-Despised Jesus

Author: John Bakewell Hymnal: Rejoice in the Lord #333 (1985) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Scripture: Psalm 45:7 Lyrics: 1 Hail, thou once despised Jesus; Hail, thou Galilean King! Thou didst suffer to release us; thou didst free salvation bring. Hail, thou universal Savior, bearer of our sin and shame, by thy merit we find favor: life is given through thy name. 2 Paschal Lamb, by God appointed, all our sins on thee were laid: by almighty love anointed, thou hast full atonement made: all thy people are forgiven through the virtue of thy blood; opened is the gate of heaven; reconciled are we with God. 3 Jesus, hail! enthroned in glory, there for ever to abide; all the heav'nly hosts adore thee, seated at thy Father's side. There for sinners thou art pleading: there thou dost our place prepare, ever for us interceding, till in glory we appear. 4 Worship, honor, power, and blessing thou art worthy to receive; loudest praises without ceasing meet it is for us to give. Help, ye bright angelic spirits, bring your sweetest, noblest lays; help to sing our Savior's merits; help to chant Emmanuel's praise!
