James H. Burke

1858 - 1901 Person Name: J. H. Burke Composer of "[Salvation! oh, the joyful sound!]" in Junior Christian Endeavor Songs James H Burke, 1855-1901, Born in Ireland, he emigrated to the U.S. in 1873. In Chicago, he attended the Moody Church and became a member. He taught Sunday school and started singing groups at the YMCA. He engaged in evangelistic work with D. L. Moody, Daniel Whittle, and others, going to Scotland and Britain for crusade work there for a year and a half. He was also music minister at the New York Gospel Tacernacle for a year in 1891. He traveled with Scottish evangelist, John McNeill for or year or so as well. John Perry

Charles Edward Pollock

1853 - 1928 Person Name: Chas. Edw. Pollock Composer of "SHEPHERD" in Songs of Zion Charles Edward Pollock USA 1853-1928. Born at Newcastle, PA, he moved to Jefferson City, MO, when age 17. He was a cane maker for C W Allen. He also worked 20 years for the MO Pacific Railroad, as a depot clerk and later as Assistant Roadmaster. He was a musician and prolific songwriter, composing 5000+ songs, mostly used in Sunday school settings and church settings. He took little remuneration for his compositions, preferring they be freely used. He produced three songbooks: “Praises”, “Beauty of praise”, and “Waves of melody”. In 1886 he married Martha (Mattie) Jane Harris, and they had three children: Robert, Edward, and a daughter. He died in Merriam, KS. John Perry ================= Pollock, Charles Edward. 1836 - 1889 Composer of "CLAY STREET" in The Best Standard Songs Used Pseudonym: Robert M. McIntosh ========== Rigdon (Robert) McCoy McIntosh USA 1836-1899 Born at Maury County, TN, into a farming family, he attended Jackson College in Columbia, TN, graduating in 1854. He studied music under Asa Everett in Richmond, VA, and became a traveling singing school teacher. He also served briefly in the Civil War. He wrote several hymns during this period of his life. In 1860 he married Sarah McGlasson, and they had a daughter, Loulie Everett. In 1875 he was appointed head of the Vanderbilt University Music Department in Nashville, TN. In 1877 he joined the faculty of Emory College, Oxford, GA. In 1895 he left Emory College to devote his time to the R M McIntosh Publishing Company. He also served as music editor of the Methodist Episcopal Church South Publishing House for over 30 years. His song book publications include: “Good news” (1876), “Light & life” (1881), “Prayer & praise” (1883), “New life” (1879), “New life #2” (1886), and “Songs of service” (1896). S. M. Bixby

1833 - 1912 Composer of "[Salvation! oh, the joyful sound!]" in Evangel Songs Samuel M. Bixby was born on May 27, 1833 in Haverhill, New Hampshire. His company, S. M. Bixby & Company, manufactured shoe blackings and shoe dressings, but music was his passion. He was also a Sunday school superintendent and choir leader. He died on March 11, 1912 in Fordham, New York. C. C. Case

1843 - 1918 Composer of "[Salvation! O! the joyful sound!]" in The Portfolio of Sunday School Songs Charles Clinton Case USA 1843-1918. Born in Linesville, PA, his family moved to Gustavus, OH, when he was four. His father was an accomplished violinist, but a neighbor gave him a small violin when he was nine, and he mastered it before he could read music. At age 16 he went to singing school (without parental consent), borrowing the money from a neighbor. C. A. Bentley, a prominent conductor, was his first vocal music instructor, and William Bradbury's “Jubilee” was the school textbook. For three winters in a row, he attended Bentley's singing school, working his father's farm in the summer. He married Annie Williams. In 1866 he studied music in Boston with B. F. Baker. He also studied under George Root, Horatio Palmer, Philip Bliss, George Webb, and others, hymnwriters in their own right. Soon after, Case began teaching music, and when James McGranahan moved two miles from his home, they became friends. Case wrote and edited a number of Gospel song books in his life. 6 works. 1835 - 1910 Person Name: Stephen V. R. Ford Composer of "[Salvation! O the joyful sound]" in Imperial Songs Born: 1835, Greenville, New York. Died: June 5, 1910, New York City. Son of Cyrus Earle and Amanda Hedden Ford, Stephen wrote several battle hymns during the American civil war which were sung by Union soldiers. He was a partner in a shirt and collar making company, Ide & Ford, in Troy, New York (1865-72). In his later years, he was known as an author, editor, composer and critic. He was living in Schenectady, New York, in 1908.
