Psalm 63

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.134 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Longing after God First Line: Great God, indulge my humble claim Lyrics: Great God, indulge my humble claim, Thou art my hope, my joy, my rest; The glories that compose thy name Stand all engaged to make me blest. Thou great and good, thou just and wise, Thou art my Father and my God; And I am thine by sacred ties; Thy son, thy servant, bought with blood With heart, and eyes, and lifted hands, For thee I long, to thee I look, As travellers in thirsty lands Pant for the cooling water-brook. With early feet I love t' appear Among thy saints, and seek thy face; Oft have I seen thy glory there, And felt the power of sovereign grace. Not fruits nor wines that tempt our taste, Nor all the joys our senses know, Could make me so divinely blest, Or raise my cheerful passions so. My life itself without thy love No taste of pleasure could afford; 'Twould but a tiresome burden prove, If I were banish'd from the Lord. Amidst the wakeful hours of night, When busy cares afflict my head, One thought of thee gives new delight, And adds refreshment to my bed. I'll lift my hands, I'll raise my voice, While I have breath to pray or praise; This work shall make my heart rejoice, And spend the remnant of my days. Scripture: Psalm 63 Languages: English

Psalm 63

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.135 (1806) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Topics: Longing after God First Line: My God, permit my tongue Lyrics: My God, permit my tongue This joy, to call thee mine; And let my early cries prevail To taste thy love divine. My thirsty, fainting soul Thy mercy doth implore; Not travellers in desert lands Can pant for water more. Within thy churches, Lord, I long to find my place; Thy power and glory to behold, And feel thy quick'ning grace. For life without thy love No relish can afford; No joy can be compared to this, To serve and please the Lord. To thee I'll lift my hands, And praise thee while I live; Not the rich dainties of a feast Such food or pleasure give. In wakeful hours at night I call my God to mind; I think how wise thy counsels are, And all thy dealings kind. Since thou hast been my help, To thee my spirit flies, And on thy watchful providence My cheerful hope relies. The shadow of thy wings My soul in safety keeps; I follow where my Father leads, And he supports my steps. Scripture: Psalm 63 Languages: English

Early, my GOD, without Delay

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #P63a (1766) Topics: Longing after God Lyrics: 1 Early, my GOD, without Delay, In haste to seek thy Face; My thirsty Spirit faints away Without thy chearing Grace. 2 So Pilgrims on the scorching Sand, Beneath a burning Sky, Long for a cooling Stream at hand, And they must drink or die. 3 I've seen thy glory and thy Pow'r Thro' all thy Temples shine; My GOD, repeat that heav'nly Hour, That Vision so divine. 4 Not all the Blessings of a Feast Can please my Soul so well, As when thy richer Grace I taste, And in thy Presence dwell. 5 Not Life itself, with all her Joys, Can my best Passions move, Or rise so high my chearful Voice, As thy forgiving Love. 6 Thus till my last expiring Day, I'll bless my GOD and King; Thus will I lift my Hands to pray, And tune my Lips to sing. Psalm 42 Part 2

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.98 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Longing after God First Line: My spirit sinks within me, Lord Lyrics: My spirit sinks within me, Lord, But I will call thy name to mind, And times of past distress record, When I have found my God was kind. Huge troubles with tumultuous noise Swell like a sea, and round me spread; Thy water-spouts drown all my joys, And rising waves roll o'er my head. Yet will the Lord command his love, When I address his throne by day, Nor in the night his grace remove; The night shall hear me sing and pray. I'll cast myself before his feet, And say, "My God, my heav'nly rock, Why doth thy love so long forget The soul that groans beneath thy stroke?" I'll chide my heart that sinks so low, Why should my soul indulge her grief? Hope in the Lord, and praise him too; He is my rest, my sure relief. Thy light and truth shall guide me still, Thy word shall my best thoughts employ, And lead me to thine heav'nly hill, My God, my most exceeding joy. Scripture: Psalm 42:6-11 Languages: English
