James Walch

1837 - 1901 Topics: Missons Composer of "TIDINGS" in Baptist Hymnal (1975 ed) James Walch was a musician and composer, born near Bolton, Lancashire, England in 1837. He spent his early life in the town and was organist in several churches there, including the parish church of St George’s. From 1870-1877, he was conductor for the Bolton Philharmonic Society. He also composed at least four published hymn tunes, the best known of which is called “Tidings”. Written in 1875, it’s usually used as the tune to a hymn called “O Zion Haste”. James Walch was a musical instrument dealer by trade, and moved to Barrow-in-Furness in 1877. He later moved to Llandudno Junction in North Wales, where he died in August 1901 and was buried locally. His wife later donated money to pay for the organs in two local churches, St Paul's Llandudno and All Saints Deganwy, in his memory. Three decades later, an article in the London Gazette reported on a dispute arising from his will, and mentioned that he had a son, Harry West Walch, who was a pianist and lived in Hereford. Gene Bartlett

1918 - 1988 Topics: Missons Author of "Tell the Good News" in Baptist Hymnal (1975 ed) Gene Bartlett was born on May 4, 1918 in Greenwood, Arkansas. He was the son of songwriter Eugene Bartlett, Sr. and was educated at John Brown University (BA), & Oklahoma Baptist University (BM, honorary DMus). He served as minister of music at three Baptist churches in Arkansas; at Trinity Baptist Church, Oklahoma City (1947-54); and Director of Church Music for the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma (1954). He was inducted into the Southern Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame in 2000. He died on July 10, 1988, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Henry Lyle Lambdin

b. 1892 Topics: Missons Author of "To Worship, Work, and Witness" in Baptist Hymnal (1975 ed) Lambdin, Henry Lyle. Professor of homiletics at Drew University, Madison, New Jersey. A native of Tennessee, all of his ministerial experience was in New Jersey. Ferdinand Q. Blanchard

1876 - 1968 Topics: Missons Author of "Word of God, Across the Ages" in Baptist Hymnal (1975 ed) Blanchard was born on July 12 in Jersey City, NJ. He attended Amherst College (AB 1898) and Yale Divinity School (BD 1901). He was ordained as a Congregational minister and pastored churches in Southington, Connecticut (1901-04); East Orange, New Jersey (1904-15); and at the Euclid Avenue Congregational Church, Cleveland, Ohio, from 1915 until retirement. Died: August 26, 2006, Parkdale Manor, Maryville, Missouri. Buried: Oak Hill Cemetery, Maryville, Missouri. Lloyd was educated at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville (BS) and the University of Missouri Kansas City (MA). She taught in Missouri elementary and secondary schools, and English literature 15 years at Northwest Missouri State University. She also directed the Women’s Mission Union. Frederick W. Foster

1760 - 1835 Topics: Missons Translator of "Christian Hearts, in Love United" in Baptist Hymnal (1975 ed) Foster, Frederick William, second son. of William Foster, was born at Bradford, Aug. 1, 1760, and educated at Fulneck, near Leeds, and at Barby in Prussian Saxony. Entering the Moravian Ministry he held several appointments until 1818, when he was consecrated a Bishop of the Moravian Church. He died at Ockbrook, near Derby, April 12, 1835. He compiled the Moravian Hymn Book of 1801, the Supplement of 1808, and the revised edition of 1826. His translations from the German, and his original hymns appeared in that collection. Two of his original hymns are in the Irish Church Hymnal, 1873; (1) "Lord, Who didst sanctify" 1808 (Holiness desired); and (2) "With thanks before the Lord appear," 1826 (Praise of the Saviour). Charles F. Brown

1942 - 1998 Topics: Missons Author of "Reach Out and Touch" in Baptist Hymnal (1975 ed) Charles Franklin Brown USA 1942-1998. Born at Nixon, TX, he was the son of a Baptist minister. He attended high school at Beeville, TX. He married Sherene Brown and he spent four years in the Navy, and they traveled to his various naval assignments around the world. No information found regarding family. During his military service he also taught in the naval School of Music at Virginia Beach, VA. He later lived at Nixon, TX, and attended Baylor U, Baylor, TX, and Southern Methodist U, University Park, TX, receiving music degrees. He worked with Word Records, Waco, TX, as a publisher. One of his music books is: ‘Sing & Celebrate’. He was an orchestra conductor and music arranger. He mentored and inspired many musicians over the years. He died at Waco, TX. John Perry
