Psalm 116 Part 2

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 293 hymnals Topics: Public praise for private mercies; Thanks public, for private mercies First Line: What shall I render to my God Lyrics: What shall I render to my God For all his kindness shown? My feet shall visit thine abode, My songs address thy throne. Among the saints that fill thine house My off'rings shall be paid; There shall my zeal perform the vows My soul in anguish made. How much is mercy thy delight, Thou ever-blessed God! How dear thy servants in thy sight! How precious is their blood! How happy all thy servants are! How great thy grace to me! My life, which thou hast made thy care, Lord, I devote to thee. Now I am thine, for ever thine, Nor shall my purpose move Thy hand hath loosed my bonds of pain, And bound me with thy love. Here in thy courts I leave my vow, And thy rich grace record; Witness, ye saints, who hear me now, If I forsake the Lord. Scripture: Psalm 116:12-19

The Lord appears my helper now

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 51 hymnals Topics: Public praise for private mercies; Thanks public, for private mercies Lyrics: The Lord appears my helper now, Nor is my faith afraid What all the sons of earth can do, Since heav'n affords its aid. 'Tis safer, Lord, to hope in thee, And have my God my friend, Than trust in men of high degree, And on their truth depend. Like bees, my foes beset me round, A large and angry swarm; But I shall all their rage confound By thine almighty arm. 'Tis through the Lord my heart is strong, In him my lips rejoice; While his salvation is my song, How cheerful is my voice! Like angry bees, they girt me round; When God appears they fly; So burning thorns, with crackling sound, Make a fierce blaze and die. Joy to the saints and peace belongs; The Lord protects their days: Let Isr'el tune immortal songs To his almighty grace. Scripture: Psalm 118:6-15

Behold the sure foundation stone

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 196 hymnals Topics: Public praise for private mercies; Thanks public, for private mercies Lyrics: Behold the sure foundation-stone Which God in Zion lays, To build our heav'nly hopes upon, And his eternal praise. Chosen of God, to sinners dear, And saints adore the name; They trust their whole salvation here, Nor shall they suffer shame. The foolish builders, scribe and priest, Reject it with disdain; Yet on this Rock the church shall rest, And envy rage in vain. What though the gates of hell withstood, Yet must this building rise; 'Tis thy own work, almighty God, And wondrous in our eyes. Scripture: Psalm 118:22-23

Longing for the house of God

Appears in 501 hymnals Topics: Worship public; Worship public First Line: Lord of the worlds above Lyrics: 1 Lord of the worlds above, How pleasant and how fair The dwellings of thy love, Thy earthly temples are; To thine abode My heart aspires With warm desires To see my God. 2 The sparrow for her young With pleasure seeks a nest, And wandering swallows long To find their wonted rest; My spirit faints With equal zeal To rise and dwell Among thy saints. 3 O happy souls that pray, Where God appoints to hear; O happy men that pay Their constant service there! They praise thee still; And happy they That love the way To Zion's hill. 4 They go from strength to strength Thro' this dark vale of tears, 'Till each arrives at length, 'Till each in heaven appears: O glorious seat When God our King Shall thither bring Our willing feet! Pause. 5 To spend one sacred day Where God and saints abide, Affords diviner joy Than thousand days beside: Where God resorts, I love it more To keep the door, Than shine in courts. 6 God is our sun and shield, Our light and our defence; With gifts his hands are fill'd, We draw our blessings thence; He shall bestow On Jacob's race Peculiar grace And glory too. 7 The Lord his people loves; His hand no good with-holds From those his heart approves, From pure and pious souls: Thrice happy he, O God of hosts, Whose spirit trusts Alone in thee. God and his Church, or, Grace and Glory

Appears in 360 hymnals Topics: Worship public; Worship public First Line: Great God, attend while Zion sings Lyrics: 1 Great God, attend while Zion sings The joy that from thy presence springs; To spend one day with thee on earth Exceeds a thousand days of mirth. 2 Might I enjoy the meanest place Within thy house, O God of grace, Not tents of ease, nor thrones of power Should tempt my feet to leave thy door. 3 God is our sun, he makes our day; God is our shield, he guards our way From all th' assaults of hell and sin, From foes without and foes within. 4 All needful grace will God bestow, And crown that grace with glory too: He gives us all things, and with-holds No real good from upright souls. 5 Oh God, our King, whose sovereign sway The glorious hosts of heaven obey, And devils at thy presence flee, Blest is the man that trusts in thee. Scripture: Psalm 84

Delight on ordinances of Worship; or, God present in his Churches

Appears in 158 hymnals Topics: Worship public; Worship public First Line: My soul, how lovely is the place Lyrics: 1 My soul, how lovely is the place To which thy God resorts! 'Tis heaven to see his smiling face, Though in his earthly courts. 2 There the great Monarch of the skies His saving power displays, And light breaks in upon our eyes, With kind and quickening rays. 3 With his rich gifts the heavenly Dove Descends, and fills the place, While Christ reveals his wondrous love, And sheds abroad his grace. 4 There, mighty God, thy words declare The secrets of thy will: And still we seek thy mercy there, And sing thy praises still. Pause. 5 My heart and flesh cry out for thee, While far from thine abode; When shall I tread thy courts and see My Saviour and my God! 6 The sparrow builds her self a nest, And suffers no remove; Oh make me like the sparrows, blest, To dwell but where I love. 7 To set one day beneath thine eye, And hear thy gracious voice, Exceeds a whole eternity Employ'd in carnal joys. 8 Lord, at thy threshold I would wait, While Jesus is within, Rather than fill a throne of state, Among the tents of sin. 9 Could I command the spacious land, And the more boundless sea, For one blest hour at thy right hand I'd give them both away. Scripture: Psalm 84:1-3

Psalm 63 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 395 hymnals Topics: Worship public First Line: Early, my God, without delay Lyrics: Early, my God, without delay, I haste to seek thy face; My thirsty spirit faints away Without thy cheering grace. So pilgrims on the scorching sand, Beneath a burning sky, Long for a cooling stream at hand, And they must drink or die. I've seen thy glory and thy power Through all thy temple shine; My God, repeat that heav'nly hour, That vision so divine. Not all the blessings of a feast Can please my soul so well, As when thy richer grace I taste, And in thy presence dwell. Not life itself, with all her joys, Can my best passions move, Or raise so high my cheerful voice, As thy forgiving love. Thus till my last expiring day I'll bless my God and King; Thus will I lift my hands to pray, And tune my lips to sing. Scripture: Psalm 63:1-5
